LaurenceD SUBS 12th Oct 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - The Surfs Up At Banzai-Pipeline | My copy has liner notes by Bobby Dale; some other covers have (the same) notes attributed to Sam Riddle, with a small pic of S.R. on the back cover as well.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 11th Oct 2017 | | Classical ItemAlfred Brendel - Beethoven: "Hammerklavier" Sonata And Sonata Op. 78 | I'm fine with this as a Netherlands release. I have another Philips LP forthcoming from the same time period, with the same layout, so I'll designate it as NL as well :-)
|
LaurenceD SUBS 9th Oct 2017 | | Classical ItemAlfred Brendel - Beethoven: "Hammerklavier" Sonata And Sonata Op. 78 | Definitely pressed and printed in the Netherlands, but I suppose you could go either way with this one. The reason that I selected UK was based on the back cover text near the bottom (admittedly hard to read in the scanned image), just above "Printed in Holland":

LaurenceD SUBS 17th Sep 2017 | | CD AlbumArthur Brown - Galactic Zoo Dossier | The tracks as listed do not quite coincide with the audio on the CD. The following listing (from this site) is more in alignment with the actual playing order:
1. Intro 0:52
2. Internal Messenger 4:05
3. Space Plucks 2:53
4. Space Plucks (Remix) 0:52
5. Galactic Zoo 2:32
6. Metal Monster 1:46
7. Simple Man 3:06
8. Night Of The Pigs 1:03
9. Sunrise 6:49
10. Trouble 2:01
11. Brains 1:09
12. Galactic Zoo (Continued) 3:05
13. Creep 4:07
14. Creation - Gypsy Escape 7:20
15. (Noise) 0:15
16. No Time/Internal Messenger 6:14
As for that cover art, well I suppose that it kind of suggests a galactic zoo...

LaurenceD SUBS 17th Sep 2017 | | Classical ItemVarious Artists - Beethoven: Complete Overtures / Minuets, German Dances, Contredanses | Originally released in LP format, ca. 1975 (Masur) and 1978-79 (Marriner), then compiled and released in CD format ca. 1994.
My copy, presumably released some time thereafter: Manufactured and distributed by Musical Heritage Society under license from Universal Classics Group

LaurenceD SUBS 10th Sep 2017 | | 78 RPMJo Ann Winters - Till I Waltz Again With You / Have You Heard | This release is mentioned in the May 16, 1953 Billboard Honor Roll of Hits on p.22 under "Till I Waltz Again With You", so your date looks good.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Blasters - Over There: Live At The Venue, London | With a total running time of around 15 minutes, I would call this a mini-LP.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Sep 2017 | | CD AlbumRamblin' Jack Elliott With Derroll Adams - Early Sessions | Same track listing as on the "Jack Elliott" LP (Everest "Archive Of Folk Music" FS 210, ca. 1967).
|
LaurenceD SUBS 9th Sep 2017 | | Classical ItemHampson, Te Kanawa, Upshaw, Furlanetto, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Levine - Mozart: Le Nozze Di Figaro | Looking at the track listings, scans of which I have included, it appears that the tracks on these discs have sub-track indices. But I cannot be sure as none of my current CD players display those sub-track numbers. My first (Sony) CD player did display them, but that one was put out to pasture long ago.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 30th Aug 2017 | | 78 RPMCarroll And Gorman - Canasta / The Little Hotel Down The Street | Thank you for that, KS. Information on the web about those early King album releases is kind of scarce, so anything we can get is appreciated.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 17th Aug 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumGeorge Harrison - Wonderwall Music | Correct John, the centering/trimming seems to be off by about 1/8 inch.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 13th Aug 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumSteppenwolf - Monster | I'm not sure if the front & back cover scans should be shown as-is or flipped sideways. I will rotate them if that's the consensus.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 13th Aug 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumGeorge Harrison - Wonderwall Music | FWIW, on my copy the words "GL litho. in U.S.A. ST-3350" are visible on the back cover (just to the right of "STEREO") and on the insert (Apple side, lower left). Not a variant, just differently offset printing/cutting by the looks of it.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Aug 2017 | | 78 RPMThe Solitaires - The Wedding / Don't Fall In Love | I admit that I had to tinker with the images a bit to remove some writing on the labels. If you're curious, view the hidden images to see them as they really are.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Aug 2017 | | 78 RPMFreddy Martin - Go Menlo Go | From https://www.menloschool.org/centennial/looking-back.php:
- In 1949, celebrated bandleader Freddy Martin composed “Go, Go, Go, Menlo!,” the School’s fight song sung at Homecoming today.
I'm not so sure about that date because of this copyright:
- Go! Menlo! Words and music by Freddy Martin. 40¢ © Maestro Music Co., New York; 7Dec51; EP59478
Also, if that cat# is an RCA matrix #, that would also support a 1951 release.
Curious as to why he composed this tune, I tried to track down a connection between Freddy and Menlo college, but have come up empty so far.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Aug 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumMonk - Straight, No Chaser | Added scans; cover has sticker overlaying new cat# PC 9451 over the old CS 9451 on the front and spine.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 11th Jun 2017 | | 78 RPMDick Thomas - Broken Heart / You Never Loved Me | Set the release date of this one (and 5002) to August 1944, based on the Billboard reviews and the July article on the launching of National records. Praguefrank lists the release dates as April 1, which cannot be correct; on the same page he dates the recording session as "Summer 1944 New York City".
|
LaurenceD SUBS 29th May 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumCaroliner Rainbow Stewed Angel Skins - I'm Armed With Qts. Of Blood | For those unfamiliar with Caroliner, this release (their second) probably requires some explanation. The group used a different variant of their name for each release. The identities of the group members have never been disclosed to my knowledge. The album sleeves were assembled and painted by hand, in batches of 1000 if I remember correctly. The cover paint on this particular copy contains all sorts of debris imbedded within, with bits and pieces falling off as one handles it. I left that sticker on the back because I couldn't be sure that it was not part of the original artwork!
I confirmed the running order of the tracks by listening and comparing with the enclosed lyrics, although to be honest most of the words as sung are just barely decipherable.

LaurenceD SUBS 17th May 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Stranglers - Black And White | Tank and Curfew performed on Revolver, 22 July 1978:

|
LaurenceD SUBS 14th May 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumSmall Faces - Small Faces | Note that the track listings for this entry are correct as far as the actual playing order on the disc. The listings for B2 and B5 are incorrectly transposed on the cover and label.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 14th May 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumAndre Kostelanetz With Johnny Cash - The Lure Of The Grand Canyon | The sound effects, which were recorded at the Grand Canyon, do not really intrude upon the integrity of the suite, but are inserted between movements and then repeated during Johnny Cash's narrated track.
Not a bad rendition of Grofé's suite; I'd like to hear a stereo copy.

LaurenceD SUBS 10th Apr 2017 | | 78 RPMTommy Doyle And His Rhythm Toppers - The Dental Song / Paddy Callahan Has Joined The Army | Runouts:
- A: US T 1009 A
- B: US T 1009 B
These two sides would seem to be original Top Hat releases.

Track A8 vocals by an unidentified female/male duo.

LaurenceD SUBS 1st Apr 2017 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - Just Another Mount / Yas | A side is an anonymous dub of "All The Horsemen Knew 'er", by Pure and Simple, released on Hollywood Hotshots 382, ca. 1937.
B side is an anonymous dub of "Yes Yes Yes", by Bob Brandy, released on Hollywood Hotshots 424, ca. 1936.

LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Mar 2017 | | 78 RPMNeil And Hazel Moore - Sins Dark Sea / Our General | Unfortunately nothing more than: NM-1A-2 / NM-1B-2
I see these Musical Moores mentioned in news items around 1952 to 1953, but as yet have found nothing about their recording activities.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Mar 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumEd McCurdy - A Ballad Singer's Choice | The label incorrectly lists track A7 as "A Great Big Sea Hove In Long Branch".
