Various Artists - It's Summer
As mentioned in notes, there are variations in the content of this album: Tracks A1 to 4 are as per CB6 but for this LP, TrA5 is My Guy(Mary Wells) against CB6's These Things Will Keep Me Loving You(Velvelettes), Then tracks A6 and 7 are the same, but CB6 track A8, Just My Imagination(Temptations) is not included in this Aussie edition. Flip the disc and B1 and 2 are the same but CB6 track B3, Heaven Must Have Sent You(Elgins) is omitted. CB6's tracks B4 to 8 become It's Summer tracks B3 to 7. CB6, by the way, is my abbreviation of Chartbusters Vol.6.

Dr. Hook - Greatest Hits
I don't know exactly how many issues there were in the PLAY 1000 series but obviously ran to more than 21 albums. For the James Bond themes EMI simply left the '1' out of the catalogue number, though it would've been planned to be the 7th in the series in any case. But did I tell you that James Bond had a brother? Eric. Nicknamed "Poxy" by schoolmates, as he grew, he followed big brother Jim into the spying game. He hated his given name so asked people to just call him E. Bond, but he was always getting into sticky situations, so much so that someone remembered his schoolboy nickname and that's how he became known as E. "Poxy" Bond! (Epoxy...get it?) Ha-Ha!

The album was issued as part of a series across all EMI labels, carrying the PLAY-1000 series catalogue numbers, this one was the third in the series as PLAY-1003.

Dr. Hook - Greatest Hits
R.C. said: "Girls can get made the charts on the 21st January 1981 and baby makes her blue jeans talk on. 23rd of June 1982" Which means I was a year out on "Girls..." but fairly correct on "Baby Makes..." Dr. Hook left Capitol in 1981, taking producer Ron Haffkine with them to Mercury. The Greatest Hits LP was issued in 1981 just as the group left the label. It wasn't issued on CD as the format was still(roughly) a year away from being launched. It wasn't until EMI-Capitol issued the revised version of the Greatest Hits album around 1990 or so that the two Mercury-sourced tracks were added.... and still they(Capitol) were claiming ownership of Sylvia's Mother and Cover Of Rolling Stone and showing them as 1980 copyrighted. Again the right thing to do was to say on the booklet "Used by permission of CBS Inc. Published & Copyright 1972".

I have that album too, R.C.! Stand-out track is "Cooky & Lyla"! For a group as zany and hilarious as Dr. Hook was on stage, they sure could turn out some great ballads!

One track I have on another CD issue is the B-side to A Little Bit More, titled A Couple More Years, another great song! Dr. Hook were a great group, hilarious on stage! I saw them perform 'Live' at the Civic Theatre, Newcastle many years ago. Their support act was Ross("I Am Pegasus") Ryan. When he first came on the audience booed him but he won that Newcastle crowd over by about his third song. I think the year might've been 1975, Dr. Hook would've just dropped the "Medicine Show" tag and touring to promote the Bankrupt LP, Ryan himself would've been promoting his After The Applause album and its feature track, Blue Chevrolet Ballerina.

R.C., Girls Can Get It and Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk were both recorded for Mercury in around 1982, just before the group finally broke up. The tracks were added to a revised version of the Greatest Hits album at tracks 11 and 22 respectively for the new CD version. Apart from those additions, the album followed the same content and track order as the Australian LP, issued as PLAY-1003 in 1981.

Here it is, folks! The Australian version of Dr. Hook's Greatest Hits. What I said in the notes is quite right. A close look at the respective labels will reveal A10 and B7 both credited to Capitol(EMI's US subsidiary) and shown as having a 1980 copyright date. The label should by rights have stated "Used by permission of CBS Inc. - Published & Copyright 1972" One stand-out track on this set that the Brits missed out on is Tr.B8, a brilliant ballad that became a favourite of mine from the first time I heard it! Red-Winged Blackbird - Beautiful!

I must make a correction to my comments of 22 hours ago! The cover's ALMOST the same! The variances are, the Australian front cover has Dennis Locorriere and Ray Sawyer superimposed on the heart-shaped moon and the rear cover has producer Ron Haffkine's photo placed in between the track listings which are grouped Side One at left of Hafkine's photo and Side 2 at right, under the heart shape. This you'll see when I upload the Aussie version, which I'm about to do.

Various Artists - 20 Explosive Hits
Hi, R.C. I think it might've been Dynamic Hits Vol.2, issued in 1971. The 2nd volume of Electrifying Hits had composer credits(this LP issued in 1972) but the first volume, issued around 1970, would likely not have composer credits.

Yes, R.C., and we know who used that song as the theme to his afternoon TV show, don't we? He shall remain nameless but his initials are Simon Townsend(ha-ha).

Sad there's no composer credit info on the labels. The problem plagued us in Australia up to about the issue of 20 Dynamic Hits Vol.2 in 1971.

I don't think it's a matter of right or wrong, Bill, it's a matter of planning when an album is compiled in order to provide a degree of variety in the programme as it plays. How fortunate are we now that, with the aid of a computer, we can compile and burn our own CD compilations in whichever configuration we desire. In the days of vinyl, you only had the compact cassette to record what you wanted and had to pick the order you wanted as you recorded each track in succession. With the CD and various burning programmes, you load in the disc and open the file folder where you've stored your wanted tracks, and as you create your "playlist", you can shuffle the tracks until you've got your desired order, then burn your disc. Technology sure is marvellous, ain't it?

The cover's the same as the Australian issue but that's all. The compilation is different. For a start, we had ten tracks per side, A4 and B8 of this version were not included on the Australian compilation. Looks like I'll be putting up the Aussie version some time soon.

No, this isn't one of those "should've gone to spec-savers" moments, R.C. This is just an example of poor planning when compiling an album.

R.C., it certainly is! Interesting that Britain only got that single in mono, we in Australia got it in stereo! I have both Brit and Aussie issues. Also, B2 was the flipside of B1, A5, To Remind Me turned up on the flipside of Soley, Soley, which is not on this album, and I suspect A4 is a remake of the old Hollies record, and B4 is yet another cover of Christie's hit.

The album is badly planned. Artists or groups should NOT appear on consecutive tracks. For example Tracks A4 and A5 should've been A3 and A4 to provide a buffer between the two Bo Toliver tracks, A6 and A9 should've been slotted in between the two Bobbie & Boobie tracks. Keep an artist or group's tracks separated by two other different artists' or groups' tracks. Spread the tracks around!

R.C., Funny you should mention that title and the group that recorded it. A friend I knew, many years ago, who migrated from England, has a sister who had a small collection of 45s, among them was that track on an EMI/Stateside single. And that was the first time I'd ever laid eyes on an English 45rpm single! The year was 1969... a lo-o-o-o-o-ong time ago!

When I get these last tracks done(one from Another Hit Wave and two from Hit Wave) they'll all be together to burn a CD replica of these albums. Only difference will be, I have reworked the tracks using my Sound Forge software to give them a simulated stereo effect - not true stereo, just simulated, after all, they're mono recordings originally!

Like with Hit Wave, I'm also recoding the contents of this album to MP3 files for burning to CD later. Only thing is, like that Twilights track on Hit Wave, the Side B/Tr.1 Simon Says(The Groove) also jumps, making it unusable for this purpose. Looks like I'm going to have to buy the single I saw of the track on my next visit to Rices in Newcastle. All the other tracks are done, it's just this one holding me up for this album.

I'm in the process of recording the contents into MP3 format of these tracks. As yet I have two remaining tracks to do, Side A/Tr.1, Needle In A Haystack(Twilights) and Side B/Tr.7, Heatwave(Bobbie Thomas & The Whispers), both cover versions of Motown songs, as is Side 2/Tr.1, Something About You, Baby(The Vibrants) originally by The Four Tops. The Twilights were covering The Velvelettes and Bobbie Thomas was covering The Vandellas. I'll have to use an alternate source for the Twilights track as this one skips. Have to dig out by Glenn Shorrock compilation to get that last track!

Record Collector's comment: "Another good song is Sacremento" - Agreed! Middle Of The Road put out some fairly catchy stuff during the first few years of the 1970s. Another of theirs, with a sting in its tail, lyric-wise is The Talk Of All The USA from 1972. Pity that much of their stuff failed to chart here. And Kimbozw, thanks for your info, and I must stand corrected, Bottoms Up did JUST make the NSW charts, debuting at 36 on 14th December, 1972 but going no higher than 35 during a 6-week stay(info: The Book[Ed.#7 -1956-2005] by Steve Scanes and Jim Barnes)

AS is an abbreviation of ASCAP. Saw it on a US MCA-Decca promo(blue label) issue of "The Colour Of My Love" by Jefferson[1968 vintage]. I have that promo disc. I'm fairly sure if you look up that record on 45cat, if there's a stock label version, then you'll see the music publishing credit: Ann-Rachel Music Inc.(or corp.) ASCAP. I also have an Australian Astor issue of that aforementioned single, by the way. Hope that satisfies your curiosity, Phil!

Bottoms Up was issued as a single in Australia but bombed out, didn't make the NSW charts(and likely not in any of the other states' charts either). Pity. Good song.

Couldn't they have padded out with more tracks so Glen Glenn wouldn't appear on four consecutive tracks? Shows very poor planning by the compilers.

Bev Harrell's YT clip showed her singing, not miming, and that's to her credit. And yes, the backing track wasn't quite the same as was on the single or the LP track.
