Paul Goldstein1 ● 24th Jul 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumJohn Mayall With Eric Clapton - Blues Breakers | A rare occasion of an album crashing into the British album charts way into the Top 10 without a hit single to accompany it, when this was at a time when albums still usually only sold on the back of hit singles. It was the following year when Psychedelia exploded that this started to change.
This was John's second album, but the first yet only to feature new guitarist Eric Clapton, who added that thick new undercoat to the group's sound, and even sing lead on one track, his first version of Robert Johnson's Rambling On M y Mind, which he re-recorded solo years later.
This album proved even more that Britain had well and truly become this second major ground for creativity.

Paul Goldstein1 ● 16th Jun 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumImpressions - The Never Ending Impressions | Apart from the four standards that were just throwaway, it was a great album, and an unusual album for early 1964, especially as it was recorded December 1963.

Paul Goldstein1 ● 2nd Jun 2023 | | Music MemorabiliaBarry Mann And Cynthia Weil - The Mann-Weil Songbook | Sorry to read the passing of Cynthia Weil who co-wrote many classic hits such as Bless Yuo, You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin', We Gotta Get Out Of This Place.

Paul Goldstein1 ● 22nd Apr 2023 | | CD AlbumAretha Franklin - One Step Ahead | The track Lee Cross appears here without the overdubbed backing vocals and handclaps, not seemingly available elsewhere.
|
Paul Goldstein1 ● 9th Dec 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Who - The Who Sings My Generation | Stereo copies are electronically reprocessed stereo. This U.S. release had a much better cover than it's UK counterpart, a photo of the group at the clock tower in London, but replaced their way out version of Bo Diddley's I'm A Man with a Pete Townshend original, Instant Party, that they soon after re-recorded as Circles.
One track, The Kids Are Alright was shorter on this U.S. release with most of the middle guitar passage spliced out. This track appeared in this shorter format on their early seventies compilation, Meaty Beaty Big And Bouncy, and on it's CD reissue.

Paul Goldstein1 ● 8th Dec 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced? | Issued in the States on Reprise a few months after it was released in the UK on the Track label, it added the A sides of his first three singles, Hey Joe, Purple Haze, and The Wind Cries Mary, in place of three tracks on the UK release, Red House, Can You See Me, and Remember.
Parts of the tune of Third Stone From The Sun were plagiarized by Cozy Powell for his seventies hit, Dance With The Devil.
UK release only was in mono only.

Paul Goldstein1 ● 8th Dec 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumCream - Fresh Cream | Issued in the States a month after the UK release in December 1966, it added the A side of their then-present single I Feel Free, in place of one track on the UK release, Crossroads.

Paul Goldstein1 ● 6th Nov 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumMarvin Gaye And Mary Wells - Together | The tracks here were recorded in February and April of 1963, but released in the States early the following year, and then over here about 6 months later. But when these tracks were recorded, Motown had not yet developed it's distinctive backing sound known as the Motown sound, which resulted in Motown finally exploding, so little of that actual Motown sound was evident here. But they recorded 7 other tracks, 6 of them during the same sessions, and the seventh a bit later which remained unreleased, but appeared as bonus tracks on the CD reissue. Paul Goldstein1 ● 8th May 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumNina Simone - Little Girl Blue | This album contained the very original U.S. release of her 1980's UK hit single reissue of My Baby Just Cares For Me. It came out in the UK on an EP on Parlophone with 4 tracks from this album 3 years later, and finally as a single in the States the year after that on this Bethlehem.

Paul Goldstein1 ● 2nd Jan 2021 | | CD AlbumThe Twistin' Kings - Twistin' The World Around | They were actually The Funk Brothers, the house band for Motown. Members of The Temptations were believed to have sung backing vocals on some tracks. Although musically it did not sound like them, not even their early sixties output, Eddie Kendricks' distinctive falsetto is noticeable on some tracks.

Paul Goldstein1 ● 21st Nov 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Supremes - Meet The Supremes | This tracklist was exclusive to the UK, and did not match that of their album released in the States about 2 years earlier, only containing some of the same tracks, plus tracks from later singles.
|
Paul Goldstein1 ● 21st Nov 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Miracles - The Fabulous Miracles | In reply to the latter, this tracklist was exclusive to the UK, containing tracks from some of their previous U.S. only albums from previous years, except for the opening track which was a non-album track A side. They had an album of this same name out in the States about 18 months earlier. But the tracklist here did not correspond, as this album only contained some of the same tracks from their previous U.S. album of the same name.
|
Paul Goldstein1 ● 21st Nov 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumMarvin Gaye - Marvin Gaye | This tracklist was exclusive to the UK, containing tracks from his second U.S. album That Stubborn Kinda Fella, plus tracks from various singles that were not at that time on albums.
|
Paul Goldstein1 ● 21st Nov 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumMarvin Gaye - How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You | Almost the same album that he had released in the States under this title in late 1964, wiith 2 tracks amended, You're A Wonderful One & Try It Baby ironically replaced by 2 tracks from his first U.S. album from as far back as 1961, The Soulful Mood Of Marvin Gaye. These 2 tracks like with most of the tracks on that album were covers of standards and had a more dated sound, and did not fit in with the rest of the tracks here, tracks 5&6 side one. Those 2 tracks were in the same vintage Lounge style as the rest of that album, and sounded very pre-Motown sound.

Paul Goldstein1 ● 21st Nov 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Marvelettes - The Marvellous Marvelettes | The tracklist was exclusive to the UK, and did not match that of their album of this same name released in the States about 2 years earlier, only containing some of the same tracks, plus tracks from other previous U.S. albums of theirs, plus a few non-album tracks from singles.
|
Paul Goldstein1 ● 21st Nov 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumMartha And The Vandellas - Heat Wave | Tracklist differs from U.S. vinyl original, only containing 7 of the 11 tracks from U.S. release from late 1963,plus 4 tracks from later singles, and one track "There He Is At My Door" from their first album, but later reappeared on the B side of the 1964 original of Dancing In The Street, the A side being a new recording at the time.
|
Paul Goldstein1 ● 18th Aug 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Association - And Then...Along Comes The Association | Who has been so kind as to upload every track here. Although this was their first album, it was my favourite of theirs. All the tracks here were memorable. It had my two favourites, Along Comes Mary, and in particular Cherish.
|
Paul Goldstein1 ● 22nd Jul 2020 | | 78 RPMJ. B. And His Bayou Boys - My Baby Told Me / Korea Blues | B side he credited to himself but was actually a version of the Fats Domino song of about a year earlier.

Paul Goldstein1 ● 18th Aug 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumAretha Franklin - Songs Of Faith | Now that Aretha has sadly departed, I thought I would stress that her career did not begin in the late sixties with her classic hits, but over 10 years earlier when she made these ultra great live performances in her father's church when she was 14. This was Aretha in the raw, before she got criminally refined. Her voice was already mature, although you could notice a slight childhood on an occasional note. But here. you can hear the full extent and energy of Aretha and her Gospel roots and it's intensity, with the Gospel shouts in the background. This is where it all began, and this is where she really explodes, She could never have replicated this full raw live atmosphere in the studio. Aretha at her greatest. It was reissued on Chess or Universal on CD as Aretha Gospel, but Don't buy any of this material on any of those shoddy out-of-copyright labels who specialize in anything over 50 years old up to 1962, and is therefore no longer in copyright, but often dubbed from other CDs or worse still, scratchy old vinyl. Continue to listen to her later material by all means, but not without hearing this first.
|
Paul Goldstein1 ● 18th Aug 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumAretha Franklin - Songs Of Faith | This must have been in fake electronic stereo as all the tracks were in fact recorded in her father's church back in 1956 when she was 14, but released about 1967 to cash in with her sudden outbreak of her success on Atlantic. For my review, read mono edition.
