That's when also the HMV 102 gramophones got the very clever auto-brake that was patented by Columbia, only the very first '31 machines have the more clunky HMV work-around auto-brake. But indeed on the record itself no hint whatsoever to EMI or any other company.

RobertG 6th Sep 2015		78 RPM Enrico Caruso - La Donna E Mobile	Found a scan of 1923 HMV catalogue. This record then still listed under this number, midway page 364 in the red section. Indeed listed as single-sided, 10" with red label. Also this catalogue entry reveals that this record is 82rpm. That is not mentioned anywhere on the label, but perhaps tellingly there is not the usual 'Speed 78' line on there either.
RobertG 28th Aug 2015		78 RPM Pee Wee Hunt - Goin' Back To Memphis / It Gets Ya'	Added as Dutch issue (pressed by Bovema, who had the license to the Capitol catalogue), but afaik pretty much is just the Dutch pressing of the US catalogue issue. So could also be seen as US release perhaps.
RobertG 22nd Aug 2015		78 RPM Willy Derby - Vlinder Waar Zweef Je Naar Toe / Eenzaam (All Allone)	No expert either, but have learned that Beka was very international from the start. They allocated number blocks to countries, e.g. xx000 to xy000 to Sweden. Released in and for the country, some still pressed in Germany. To make it all a bit fuzzy, they re-used numbers sometimes for another country. This one does look to fall in the Dutch numbering block. Title and artist definitely Dutch :-)

Somewhere between '04 and probably '08 then - perhaps re-issued as double sided or perhaps originally even. With Odeon launching double-sided in '04 in Germany, I guess Zonophone would/could respond.

RobertG 15th Aug 2015		78 RPM Will Derby - Blindgeschoten / Visschersbede	Music melody composed by Simonetti and Drigo respectively, indeed. The songs are not related to the original pieces, but newly written tearjerkers. (New in 1919, that is :-) Blindgeschoten is about the young soldier returning home blind having done his duty to his country and now yearning for death. Visschersbede is about the perils of fishery and that mourning wives are the high price paid for fish.

The ref on the label indicates the melody it is being sung to. Very sentimental texts by the way, 'smartlap' genre. (He'd been fairly successful already as entertainer from ~1915, starting recording in 1919 - so this is (one of) his first records.)

Cardboard sleeve proclaiming they are the exclusive sole sellers (alleen verkoop) of Broadcast Records.

RobertG 5th Mar 2015		78 RPM The Original Ramblers - Broadway Melody / Haven't I?	One of their earliest records. (Sung in English with a hint of Dutch accent.) Band formed in 1926, one of the most popular bands in The Netherlands during the 30's, 40's and 50's. The band still exists.

RobertG 31st Dec 2014		78 RPM Enrico Caruso - Tosca (E Lucevan Le Stelle)	Was wondering; when making a recording at Camden, would there always be a master made for the UK Gramophone Company and one for the US Victor company? The Victor ledger states this is matrix number B8346, yet on this runout it states A8346. All the rest matches exactly. Have been seeing this same A/B on more records from that early era. Would routinely an A and a B matrix be simultaneously made during the session, the A being shipped off and the B entered into the Victor books? (Seems a challenge, without electrical amplification?)

(Also the reason for me to contribute back and scan and upload records :-) Ergo less about exactly when something is a label, but more about understanding what a particular record is; from when and with what context. For that suggest adding explanation to the notes that it was kept in catalogue up to mid-twenties and pressed new over the years. (Unsure to what extent The Gramophone Company thought of HMV as a new label here, there is a continuity in catalogue and numbering I suspect/think.)
RobertG 9th Oct 2014		78 RPM Enrico Caruso - La Donna E Mobile	As far as I could tell, this is the 1908 recording and matrix - the numbers tally with the company records for 1908. It's single sided, has angel on the reverse. However the label is much later, updated to a later company design-style. Pressed after 1910, perhaps even around 1920? Got it in a small stack that all probably date from between 1918 to 1923. Would not be surprised if this particular disk was sold in 1921 - expect there was a flurry of publicity and buying at time of his death.

Seems around that time a bit of a boom in (short-lived) labels and 'traveling' matrices. Only mention I found of Bruno Dessa till now was on Michael Tomas's list of British Dacapo releases (http://www.mgthomas.co.uk/dancebands/Labels/LabelPages/Dacapo.htm)
RobertG 25th Jun 2014		78 RPM Bruno Dessa - Carmen / Der Troubadour	By its look, sound and feel an early 20th century record, around 1907 probably. No label indicated - could perhaps be an early Dacapo record? Trying to imitate and look like a Zon-O-Phone record?
