TheJudge 24th Jun 2023 | | CD AlbumSparks - The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte | ReviewAlthough not quite as consistently outstanding as their previous two albums (Hippopotamus and A Steady Drip Drip Drip), there is still much to acclaim from these veteran funsters. They have once again taken a variety of influences and genres - Escalator is reminiscent of Kraftwerk circa 1973-77 for example, or perhaps the stuff Daniel Miller released on Mute at the end of that same decade - and melded them into their own style.
That style includes, of course, their ability to write near-perfect pop tunes allied to lyrics seeing the world from a very particular viewpoint (Nothing Is As Good... being the prime example here) and also producing the odd flash of the astonishing, such as We Go Dancing, where satirical lyrics are combined with music which at the same time is reminiscent of 20th century orchestral music and provides the creepiest earworm I think I've ever encountered. A fine album.

TheJudge 18th Jun 2023 | | 78 RPMOlive Goff - Phyllis Has Such Charming Graces / In Quelle Trine Morbide | Good work everybody! That's what I call 'collaborative'!
|
TheJudge 17th Jun 2023 | | 78 RPMOlive Goff - Phyllis Has Such Charming Graces / In Quelle Trine Morbide | I'd add that someone called Clive is not likely to tbe the artist given that both sides are clearly sung by a woman. I'll remoive the A-side artist but put Jane Wilson as the singer on the B-side.
Could the sides be in the opposite order to the one you've submitted? The 'Phyllis' side has '-1' on the cat# and the Puccini has '-2'.
|
TheJudge 17th Jun 2023 | | 78 RPMOlive Goff - Phyllis Has Such Charming Graces / In Quelle Trine Morbide | The A-side is from Puccini's opera Manon Lescaut, the song being In quelle trine morbide from Act II.
Side B - again from what's on the label - is the song Phyllis Has Such Charming Graces. There is a song of that title dating from the late 17th C., but I don't know if it's this one. Could the singer be called Jane Wilson? There was an American singer of that name, but the dates don't match up with this recording.
