xiphophilos 15th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Dorsey Brothers - Dixie Dawn / I Must Have That Man | Thank you, Han, for looking that up. I was not aware of these Odeon export series. They were then probably marketed all over continental Europe. In any case, I've added Export above.

xiphophilos 14th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Dorsey Brothers - Dixie Dawn / I Must Have That Man | Are you sure this is not French? Usually, French Odeon releases have an A prefix and 6 digits, and it's also typical for French records that they use a period to separate the thousands: A221.110.
I haven't seen a German release with more than 5 digits.
On Discogs there's another Odeon release that I suspect is French, submitted by "Monsieur_77" and with what I assume is a French royalty stamp saying "Publications Francis-Day": Odeon A 189267.

xiphophilos 14th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMMillikin University Band - I Want To Go Back To Millikin / Fight For The Blue | Lyrics of the A1 fight song:
"I want to go back to Millikin upon the Sangamon
Where all the guys in the omnibus
Are raising a heck of a lot of fuss.
I want to go back to Millikin upon the Sangamon
I want to go back, I want to go back
To Millikin."

xiphophilos 11th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMEdward VIII - King's Farewell Speech Part I / King's Farewell Speech Part II | Interesting that this speech was released in the United States as well, not just in the United Kingdom. But then Edward resigned to marry an American, of course, so there would be some interest in his speech in the former Colonies. In fact, the interest on this side of the pond was feverish. The database currently has a plethora of American releases of this speech, and if you look around, you can find even more American releases. In contrast, it's near-impossible to find a British copy of this radio broadcast.

xiphophilos 10th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPME. Gamilielit - לילה הגלבע Leyla Bagilboa (Night On The Gilboa) / שיר המעפילים Shir Ha'Maapilim (Song Of The Refugees) | This record is from 1947 or 1948 (KZ. 1002 was recorded either in 1946 or Oct. 1947 per https://www.sephardicmusic.org/labels/Kol_Zion/KZ.1002.htm).
The labels say "Product Of Kol Zion Ltd., Nathanya, Palestine - Made In England By Oriole Records, London, W.1".
The market of release (country) would need to be Mandatory Palestine, established in 1920 by the League of Nations and administered by the United Kingdom between 1922 and 1948 and officially flying the Union Jack (wikipedia). This entity is currently not available as a choice on 45worlds.
The Palestinian Territories are a more recent and geographically much smaller entity, established in 1988, that does not include Nathanya, today's Netanya, Israel.

xiphophilos 8th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Beatles - We Can Work It Out / Day Tripper | I had added the link to my valuation, but it has been removed.
Jan. 27, 2021: sold on ebay for £1,255 ($1,498, 32 bids) in FAIR condition (which I rendered as VG) with the original sleeve in FAIR condition:
"FAIR- played through on both sides, plays reasonably well but with surface noise & hiss, the odd pop or click- it will not skip, jump or stick, however, as you can see, I'm playing it with a Clear Audio Concept V2 cartridge...- has been played many times before- this 78rpm has not been cleaned, has storage bloom, a number of scuffs- surface is covered with extremely light marks & a dullness in patches- there are a few light scratches but no deep scratches or chips."
(popsike link)
I've now also found another sales result:
Mar. 1, 2022: sold on ebay for £ 822 (18 bids) in Near Mint condition:
"VINYL CONDITION NEAR MINT- as per the photographs- played once, plays superbly throughout - no chips or scratches, the odd light scuff- been in storage a long time, needs a wipe- doubtful a better copy out there."
(popsike link)
The sales result you entered was from Jan. 11, 2021 (it's the highest, thus shown first in popsike):
Jan. 11, 2021: sold on ebay for £1,880 ($2,244 , 23 bids) in Very Good condition, without sleeve: "CONDITION VERY GOOD- played through on both sides, plays well, it will not skip, jump or stick, there is hiss & light surface noise, however, as you can see from the photo, I'm playing it with a Clear Audio Concept V2 cartridge...- this item prior to me was in fact unplayed, as it was found as part of old stock- this 78rpm has not been cleaned, very minor storage bloom, the odd light scuff- there are no scratches or chips."
(popsike link)
All these were from the same seller who bought them from someone who found them in India a year earlier.
My guess is, there are probably quite a few of them still out there, hiding in Indian basements and attics.

xiphophilos 8th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMFrank Sinatra - You'll Never Walk Alone / If I Loved You | Columbia DD 515 features tracks recorded in 1947 and released in the US in Fall 1948. That makes me think that Columbia DD 529 cannot be a 1945 release, as it was originally entered, but must be from 1948.

xiphophilos 6th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMAl Jolson - Scandinavia (Sing Dose Song And Make Dose Music) / Funeral Blues (Eat Custard And You'll Never Break A Tooth) | @DeweyGill: By the way, can you read the take and stamper info stamped under your copy's B side label?
The A side says: 3-EAL-361 79726 (take 3, mother EAL, stamper 361, matrix 79726).
|
xiphophilos 6th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMAl Jolson - Scandinavia (Sing Dose Song And Make Dose Music) / Funeral Blues (Eat Custard And You'll Never Break A Tooth) | Switched track order. Al Jolson was the bigger star at the time. That's why his song is listed first in The Talking Machine World, May 15, 1921, page 178: Advance Record Bulletins for June, 1921 (i.e., released in late May 1921).
|
xiphophilos 6th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMAl Jolson - Scandinavia (Sing Dose Song And Make Dose Music) / Funeral Blues (Eat Custard And You'll Never Break A Tooth) | GJ means it's a July 1921 repress, see https://www.45worlds.com/45worlds/45w_forum_topic_view.php?t=102544&h. The CP code seems to be on the original May 1921 release.

xiphophilos 3rd Sep 2024 | | 78 RPM"Roxy" Rockwell's "A" Band Players - R. C. B. March / Parade Of The Scorpions | The band director, "Roxy" Rockwell, introduces the A track by thanking purchasers of this record for supporting high school band music. So my guess is that "Roxy" Rockwell served as the band director of a Chicago-area high school around 1930. So far, I have not been able to track down him or the high school.
Is there a school around Chicago whose students call themselves "Scorpions"?
What does "R. C. B." in the title "R. C. B. March" stand for?

xiphophilos 3rd Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMArthur Collins - The Preacher And The Bear / Bake Dat Chicken Pie | I have cropped the last 2 labels and rearranged all labels chronologically.
The Gold Band label with "Note the Notes" usually doesn't show a label printing code. I've seen one with an HZ = August 1917 code, but that is exceptional: Columbia A2310.
The next label version, with "Grafonola" instead of "Note the Notes", but still the same six patents in two long lines of equal length, always features label printing date codes.
The earliest one I have observed is FZ = June 1917 on Columbia A2293. So the "Grafonola" label was introduced in June 1917.

xiphophilos 1st Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Sportsmen - What Do You Do In The Infantry / Ke-Toky-I-O | This is one of the most successful a capella recordings made in Summer 1943 to circumvent the so-called Petrillo Recording Ban that had started on August 1, 1942 and finally ended with RCA Victor and Columbia signing agreements with the union on November 11, 1944. The American Federation of Musicians (AFM) striked against record companies to force them to pay royalties for recorded music to all the musicians involved.

xiphophilos 26th Aug 2024 | | 78 RPMHarry Lauder - When I Was Twenty-One | Could it be that the image is too big? More than 1500x1500 pixels could be a problem. I usually make my images 1200x1200 pixels. One other potential problem is when the image is not a jpg-file but some other king of image file.

xiphophilos 25th Aug 2024 | | 78 RPMJoan Hammond - La Boheme (Act 1) They Call Me Mimi / Madame Butterfly (Act 2) One Fine Day | Added the recording dates per Roger Flury's "Puccini Discography" (here).
This was Joan Hammond's debut recording.
Could anyone who has uploaded labels please add their copy's runouts? They will probably list the tax code (T, TT, DT, ST, etc) in the runouts, which would enable us to date the labels.

Viva-tonal style label without the words "Viva-tonal Recording", with one line of registration text under the logo on top and two patent dates (Jan. 21, '13 and May 22, '23) at the bottom, cf. M. Sherman & K. Nauck, "Note the Notes," page 31.
