Comment by cyeaman SUBS: Bix is in top form on this release, which couples two of his greatest and most loved performances. The American composer, conductor and music scholar Gunther Schuller wrote: "His crowning achievements were the superbly timed, relaxed, mellifluous solos on Singin' The Blues and I'm Coming Virginia. Here is the essential Bix, unspectacular, poignant, with a touch of reserve and sadness shining through." This is an accurate and succinct critique of these jazz masterpieces. Comment by han enderman: Par R-2097 - added label type #2 A/B (gold label with "or" at 5) and type #3b A with DT tax code. I assume A #3b is a later printing of type #3, as the title line has been reset (and is similar to #4), while #3a (ST) resembles #2 (note distance between "Fox-Trot" and composer).

Comment by cyeaman SUBS: It's a pity we can't fade out Seger Ellis' sappy vocals on "Blue River" and bring Bix's counter-melody to the front. At least we can hear him lead the ensemble in the final chorus. Alas, not even Bix could save the B side.

Comment by cyeaman SUBS: Recorded between rehearsals and performances with Paul Whiteman's orchestra for his show "Say It With Music" at New York's Paramount Theater. "Borneo" contains the famous "chase" chorus played by Bix and Tram, considered by many to be an innovation the two of them introduced into the jazz idiom. They both sound in top form at this session. Great record, despite the fact that OKeh reported sales of only a paltry 3000 copies.

Comment by cyeaman SUBS: Added a pair of labels from a ca. 1932-35 repressing, showing larger (~70 mm) center pressing rings and lacking the "©" before OKEH in the bottom line of text.
