The King of Hillbilly - King 500 / 1000 SeriesThe King Record Co. was founded by Syd Nathan in 1943 in Cincinnati, Ohio, as an exclusive hillbilly (C&W) label, starting with #500.In 1945, race (R&B) records followed, starting with #4100, first on the Queen sub-label, as of 1947 on King. --> 4000 / 5000 Series In 1949, a popular series was added, starting with #15000, --> 15000 Series; it was discontinued in Feb 1953 and integrated in the former C&W series. Last releases in the 500 /1000 series came out in Oct 1955, the highest number was #1512. As of Nov 1955, new C&W and Pop releases were in the 4000 series. Note: Alleged King numbers • 1010, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1030, 1071, 1073 by Emil Coleman, • 1089, 1091, 1110, 1111, 1112, 1124, 1183, 1184 by Ruth Wallis, • 1022 by Air Lane Trio are actually on DeLuxe sub-label (possibly intended for reissue in album sets on King).
