Washboard Joe And His Scrubbers - Open Up Your Heart (And Let The Sunshine In) / Big Ben's Banjo Band (1955)
When I was much, much younger, I clearly remember an episode of The Flintstones in which Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm were singing a song with the lyrics going "Open up your heart and let the sun shine in..." This release caught my eye yesterday while skimming through the Parlophone releases of the mid to late '50s.. and I'm thinking.. nahh, it couldn't be..

Then I see the song was written in 1954 by Stewart Hamblen.. yeah, could be.. wouldn't you know it.. Hanna-Barbera Productions released a 45 rpm single in 1965... Cat # HBR 449.

So, is this a skiffle group? That would be my first question.. and secondly, was this a production of the legendary George Martin?

King Cole Trio - Sweet Lorraine / Embraceable You (1944)
That.. Is an awesome website, xiphophilos! Very informative! Now, I've never been to Los Angeles, but I find it ironic that the Decca studios address on Melrose was next door from the building that Capitol Records bought in '49 to become their recording studio at 5515 Melrose. I may be going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing this is when Capitol may have started using tape for recording sessions, if indeed the studio was set up with the latest in recording equipment..

King Cole Trio - Sweet Lorraine / Embraceable You (1944)
My question is... Is this the same recording as Decca 8520 from 1941, or did the King Cole Trio record another version for Capitol? Not having the Decca pressing, I cannot compare the two...

The King Cole Trio - I Realize Now / Gee Baby Ain't I Good To You (1944)
Hmm... I'm going to have to listen to this on YouTube... I'm thinking the King Cole Trio side is the same as Capitol 169.. Of course, the first track is the B side of the Capitol 78...

The King Cole Trio - Gee, Baby, Ain't I Good To You / I Realize Now (1944)
Ok, my friend... So, the original pressing should have the "42" style label. I have that Capitol labels.pdf downloaded on my phone.. it is an excellent reference source! However.. since this pairing was released in September of '44, it seems to be, at least to me, that the "42" label would have been relatively shortlived.. depending on when the "45" label replaced the "42"....

Question, W.B.lbl... if the Scranton Record Co. pressed Capitol releases going back to the beginning in 1942, were they using the anvil mark on the deadwax since the beginning? Or was this something added after the sale to Capitol? There seems to be some confusion whether this pairing is a repress or not...

I'm wondering if the B-side is actually "Lydia the Tattooed Lady", as made famous by Groucho Marx.

Steve Gibson And The Redcaps - Wedding Bells Are Breaking Up That Old Gang Of Mine / I'd Love To Live A Llifetime For You (1948)
These plastic releases by Mercury are certainly making me very curious... This one (from what I've seen) seems to be the first, and the last one I'd seen is from June, 1951. The 1948 pressings all say "not to be sold" .. by 1949, this seems no longer to be the case. Was this an experiment with vinyl by Mercury? We do know that all of the V-Discs, (except early Columbia pressings) were vinyl.. but given the late date of Mercury's inception in 1945, they may have been excluded from the V-Disc program. Were these vinyl Mercury pressings meant for jukebox/radio play?

Julie London - Cry Me A River / S'Wonderful (1955)
Hard to say, about residuals that is. Bobby Troup wrote "Route 66" way back in 1946, and there must be a couple hundred covers of that tune alone... Julie started her career, in film and as a pin up girl in 1944... She didn't start recording until 1955 for Liberty, and released 32 LPs up till 1969. I don't know when Julie and Bobby met.. it was before she started recording. Julie was previously married to "Just the facts, ma'am." Jack Webb from 1947 till 1954. Bobby and Julie married in 1959, and stayed married till Bobby's death in 1999.

Little Richard - The Girl Can't Help It / All Around The World (1956)
From what I have read, Bobby Troup (writer of the song "Route 66", as well as playing Dr. Joe Early on the series "Emergency"), not only wrote this song, but the entire film soundtrack. Bobby's future wife, Julie London, also appears in the film.
