Bob And Alf Pearson - In A Kitchenette / You Fell In Love With The Moonlight (1930)
The matrix numbers referred to in the Notes are a 3:30 length version. There seems to be a shorter version lasting 2:48 on YouTube. If anyone else has a copy, please do let us know.

Yet the country is listed as UK - surely needs changing if South Africa?

Various Artists - Voice Of The Stars No. 2 (1935)
This had Decca as the second label (now removed, thanks mods). I would have thought all these discs were EMI pressings. The first and last were on Regal Zonophone, and the typeface looks like EMI discs of the period. Also, more importantly, the matrices (on the runout) are the series used by HMV, an EMI label:
Side A: OEA 1652-2
Side B: OEA 1651-2

Various Artists - Voice Of The Stars No. 5 (1938)
Without being able to play the discs, I would guess at the first name initials being as follows:

Part 1:
Actual Voices of : Jackie Cooper; Merle Oberon; Morton Selton; Sylvia Sidney; Joel McCrea; Humphrey Bogart; Claire Trevor; Jack Buchanan; Elsie Randolph; Gene Autry; Jack Hulbert; Patricia Ellis; Arthur Riscoe; Leslie Howard; Joan Blondell; Paul Muni; George Formby

Part 2:
Actual Voices of : Larry Adler; Charles Boyer; Claudette Colbert; Charles Laughton; Robert Taylor; Margaret O'Sullivan; Joan Crawford; Spencer Tracy; Alan Curtis; Jeanette Macdonald; Allan Jones; Irene Dunne; Cary Grant & Dog; Ronald Colman, Madeleine Carroll; Douglas Fairbanks Jr.; Anna Neagle

Various Artists - Voice Of The Stars No. 1 (1933)
Voice of the Stars No5 was on Regal Zonophone MR 2722.

I've created a List of the Voice of the Stars 78s, and added the other releases as "See Also" under each entry. The label for 2,3 and 4 is clearly "Voice Of The Stars". I'd say they are all EMI pressings, but No. 2 has a HMV matrix number - OEA. No. 3 and No. 4 have CA matrix numbers, which were used by the Columbia label. I believe HMV, Columbia and Regal Zonophone were all part of EMI during this period.

Bob And Alf Pearson - Little Dutch Mill / Now We're Sweethearts Again (1934)
The first pressing seems to have Rex 8155-A (F 752-1) and Rex 8155-B (F 753-1)

A second pressing has an alternate take on the B-side only:
8155 B-2 is matrix F 753-2.

There is also a third pressing: 8155 A-2 with matrix number F 752-2, and the other side is 8155 B-2, matrix F 753-2.

I don't know why Rex did this. It seems to be a common feature of Rex and Imperial 78s that different pressings often have different recording takes.

Petula Clark - Silver Dollar / Talky, Talky, Talky (1951)
I think the Petula site tends to just copy dates from one country (where known) to another. When a release had different international pressings, they group them together, but the dates with month of release only apply to the UK 78s. I supplied them with those. The year of release for many others is often a guess, so I would think it likely this record was released in early 1951. Maybe original release catalogues haven’t survived from other countries to help date the 78s more accurately.

Lys Assia - Ponylied / O Mein Papa (1952)
I don’t think this was issued in 1950 (as previously stated above). The catalogue number sequence suggests 1954, which is more likely. Probably a reissue following the hit cover versions.

Eartha Kitt - Tierra Va Tembla / Caliente (1954)
Based on contemporary Billboard reviews of other Seeco releases, this was most likely released between April and July 1954. The tracks were recorded in 1952 and also issued on the EP referred to - 'Eartha Kitt Goes Latin' was the title.

That link has now expired. But it's on Popsike, having sold twice in the last ten years or so. The last time was in 2010 for £31. The year before, £65.

Jack Hylton - Wedding Of The Rose / Grasshoppers' Dance (1931)
"Grasshoppers' Dance" was on numerous 'Children's Favourites' compilations over the years, presumably often requested on Uncle Mac's BBC shows. As EMI released those collections, it makes sense that it was this HMV recording that was included, rather than Hylton's re-recording for Decca of 14/09/33. It's interesting to compare the two.

Al Martino - Here In My Heart / I Cried Myself To Sleep (1952)
If it was #1 for 9 weeks from 14th November 1952, that would not suggest its bestselling days were behind it. Are you referring to ‘The Missing Charts’ book? I guess that might be the source for it being a hit in July. But it would have to have been a fairly skewed sample of shops if it wasn’t actually the bestselling record for those 9 weeks it’s officially listed as a #1.

Very interesting, but it doesn’t actually say it’s a new release as far as I can see? I suppose it would be recent at least.

Dorothy Squires - The Gipsy / I'll Close My Eyes (1945)
Different coupling to the UK 78s. Looks like Australian Parlophone created new matrix numbers from their own series: the original numbers are CE-11404-1 and CE-11471-1. I doubt Dorothy recorded new versions in Australia!

Bob And Alf Pearson - Sing As We Go; Just A Catchy Little Tune / Love (Wonderful Love) (1934)
Matrix numbers:
F 983-1
F 983-2
F 984-1
F 984-2

A second pressing of this disc (8308-B-2 in the run-out, same labels) has a different take of "Love (Wonderful Love)": instead of F 984, it has F 984-2. Listening to the discs confirms that they are unique takes. I suppose this was usually done when the original master was damaged, but the A-side remains the same on both pressings, so presumably that was still okay to use.

Jack Phillips' Melodians - Three Little Words / I'm Alone Because I Love You (1931)
“British Dance Bands on Record” by Brian Rust lists all of them, except the accordion bands (which weren’t included in the book). I can add that list. Rust is pretty authoritative on personnel so I think those pseudonyms can be stated with some level of certainty.

It’s quite annoying that Rust excluded accordion bands from his book, as I would really like to have a list of Bidgood’s accordion records to check the vocalists. I’m not sure what other resource there might be for that, apart from listening to the records.

Petula Clark - You're The Sweetest In The Land / You Are My True Love (1951)
I’m not sure all the dates are correct there. Unfortunately there’s a lack of session data for Polygon material but I don’t think any of it was recorded in 1949. I supplied the dates with months for that listing - they only apply to the British releases. Months aren’t known for 78s from other countries.

Petula Clark - You're The Sweetest In The Land / You Are My True Love (1951)
Because it was recorded in 1950. It isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that other countries released it first. Perhaps the other countries released it in 1951 too; accurate dates for 78s are more easily found for British issues of the period.
