mister_tmg 16th Feb 2020 | | 78 RPMBob And Alf Pearson - Memories For The Fireside Part I / Memories For The Fireside Part II (1930) | Matrix numbers:
Z 1726-2
Z 1727-2
If anyone's copy has anything different, please do let me know. The Broadcast numbering system was to have an X for take 2, XX for take 3, etc. No X means take 1. The X was often stamped into the wax on these smaller discs, or the matrix number was etched into the label. I can see that the copy Redpunk has shows an X on both sides, indicating it is take 2. I mention this as Broadcast pressings would have different master takes on different pressings.

mister_tmg 2nd Jan 2020 | | 78 RPMEvelyn Knight - Powder Your Face With Sunshine (Smile!, Smile!, Smile!) / Betsy (1949) | This record played a part in the recent BBC TV drama Elizabeth is Missing. It got smashed, although the disc shown looked more like an LP than a Brunswick 78. The recording wasn’t heard, but sung by the star, Glenda Jackson, and played by a band. As it was partly set in 1949, that aspect was at least historically accurate. The character’s granddaughter asked if she liked Vera Lynn, and said no, as she “couldn’t hold a candle to Evelyn Knight”. That was clearly the version that the characters had in mind.

mister_tmg 24th Oct 2019 | | 78 RPMEwan MacColl - Sixteen Tons / The Swan Necked Valve (1956) | That’s what I meant, the hit version was by Tennessee Ernie Ford.
|
mister_tmg 3rd Oct 2019 | | 78 RPMGuy Mitchell - Wimmin / I Can't Help It (If I'm Still In Love With You) (1952) | Surprised it wasn’t a hit, the A side was perfect for him. @zabadak, nothing to do with swimming...

mister_tmg 20th Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMThe Midnight Merrymakers - The King's Horses (And The King's Men) / The Love Waltz (1931) | Thanks for adding. Judging by the photos, your copy seems to have the same matrix numbers as on other copies. Broadcast would often press multiple takes of a recording on different pressings of the same disc. Unfortunately for us collectors, the matrix numbers are stamped and/or etched into the label. The stamped number often starts with a Z or an L, but then the matrix number will generally be handwritten and embossed into the label too. The handwritten matrix number adds the take number, but not in the usual format (-1, -2 etc). No suffix means take 1, an X means take 2, XX means take 3, and so on.
It’s thanks to British Dance Bands on Record that we know this - or certainly some of us. So I think the A side of this disc has an X written at the end of the matrix number (take 2), and the B side doesn’t, so is take 1. These are the only takes documented by Brian Rust and Sandy Forbes in the aforementioned book, but they don’t claim to be comprehensive in listing takes - presumably they just listed those they were aware of. There are certainly further takes of recordings which aren’t detailed in that book (although perhaps not for this particular disc) and I think it’s worth noting them.

mister_tmg 13th Aug 2019 | | 78 RPMTed Summers' Dance Devils - Go Home And Tell Your Mother / I Don't Mind Walking In The Rain (1931) | Interesting that Ted Summer had become Ted Summers by the time of this 78. Still Harry Bidgood either way.
|
mister_tmg 9th Aug 2019 | | 78 RPMWilfred Pickles - Get Well Soon / Good Luck, Good Health, God Bless You (1957) | This was several years old, first issued in 1954 in the UK.

mister_tmg 9th Aug 2019 | | 78 RPMBob And Alf Pearson - Consolation / Home (1932) | Labels cropped, thanks for adding the photos. The tracks were recorded in January 1932.
Two takes of both sides are known to exist on different pressings:

mister_tmg 25th Jul 2019 | | 78 RPMBob And Alf Pearson - Sing, Brothers! / Where The Lilies Of The Valley Grow (1932) | Matrix numbers:

mister_tmg 25th Jul 2019 | | 78 RPMDon Porto's Novelty Accordion Band - Isle Of Capri / Hawaiian Twilight (1934) | A-side has two takes on different pressings:
JW 2101-1
JW 2101-2
I'm not sure where the JW comes from actually, because I can't see it anywhere on the disc, only the number. The B-side is 2102 (take 1, we can assume, without a suffix).
|
mister_tmg 21st Jul 2019 | | 78 RPMEwan MacColl - Sixteen Tons / The Swan Necked Valve (1956) | Is the A side not the Tennessee Ernie Ford song?
|
mister_tmg 2nd Jun 2019 | | 78 RPMBetty Driver - Swing Bugler / The World Will Sing Again (1942) | Yes, I think you’re right. I found this record on eBay as MR 3593. MR 2593 seems to be by the Two Leslies. It's now corrected.
|
mister_tmg 6th May 2019 | | 78 RPMJack Payne - Jack Payne's Party (1932) | Matrix numbers:
6255-1
6526-1, 6256-2 and 6256-3 have all been reported.
There is also a pressing with the publishers actually printed on the label, rather than stuck on.
|
mister_tmg 8th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMBob And Alf Pearson - Roll Along, Covered Wagon / Beside The Singing Waters (1935) | Matrixes appear to be F1085 (take 1) and F1086-2. The copy I picked up yesterday has F1085 and F1086 (take 1), so evidently an alternate take on the B side. Would be very interesting to hear take 2 of that.

mister_tmg 7th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMGracie Fields - Little Donkey / The Carefree Heart (1959) | Gracie’s last U.K. 78.

A: Monday, 21st April 1952.
B: Tuesday, 22nd April 1952.

mister_tmg 4th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMRoy Orbison - Only The Lonely (Know How I Feel) / Here Comes That Song Again (1960) | Finally, there is some evidence for this record - the Decca Group Catalogue lists it as "also available on 78". The annual hardback books would seem to be definitive. I checked the book which covers up to September 1960. This was listed as 45 rpm only. But knowing it was still climbing the charts (it reached the top 10 W.E. 22 September, and #1 on 20 October), I decided to check the next volume. Yes, this record is listed as available on both 45 and 78. It's apparent that Decca must have decided to press a 78 due to increased demand. It would still be great to have confirmation it exists, but a contemporary catalogue is quite strong proof I'd say.
However, there’s something amiss. The 78 symbol is shown in the Song Title Index for Only the Lonely. It is not shown next to the b-side, Here Comes That Song Again, nor next to Roy Orbison in the Artist Index. This leaves further room for doubt, although one of our members does claim to have a copy.
|
mister_tmg 4th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMEddie Cochran - Three Steps To Heaven / Cut Across Shorty (1960) | The Decca Catalogue covering 1960 lists this as 45 rpm only. That seems a pretty concrete answer to the question and the entry can probably be deleted.
|
mister_tmg 21st Mar 2019 | | 78 RPMKitty Kallen - Are You Looking For A Sweetheart / Little Things Mean A Lot (1954) | I doubt that Kitty’s big hit “Little Things Mean a Lot” (recorded 30 December 1953) was the b-side on this and the Australian 78. “Are You Looking For a Sweetheart” just has a much lower matrix number as it comes from an earlier session (27 July 1953). The U.K. and US release of “Little Things” had another song from the session as the flip side, “I Don’t Think You Love Me Anymore”.

mister_tmg 8th Mar 2019 | | 78 RPMJack Payne - Good-Night Vienna / Five Minutes To Twelve (1932) | A: Recorded May 1932 with John Thorne
