The new RRPG book lists this at £400. I’ve written to the editor suggesting they remove it, as there’s no evidence it exists. It also lists the following:
Roy Orbison
1960: London HLU 9149
Only The Lonely (Know How I Feel) / Here Comes That Song Again (78)
£400

Jimmy Jones
1960: MGM MGM 1078
Good Timin’ / Too Long Will Be Too Late (78)
£80

Johnny Preston
1960: Mercury AMT 1079
Running Bear / My Heart Knows (78)
£40

The Decca Catalogue covering 1960 lists this as 45 rpm only. That seems a pretty concrete answer to the question and the entry can probably be deleted.

Thanks for the information. However, RIS notes the following:

All the other reported 78 rpm issues for 1960 have been verified, up to and including HLX 9190 (Johnny & The Hurricanes) which was notified as additionally available on 78 rpm to record dealers in early October 1960, along with HLD 9184 (Pat Boone) and HLP 9188 (Ricky Nelson).
There is a trade advert showing these three releases available on 78rpm. This was a month after their original issue on 45rpm (all came out in September), so it’s possible other records were issued on 78 after their initial release.

A few HL suffix letters are explained here and an alternative at the bottom of this page.

There is another source - 'The New Records' published monthly by Francis Antony Ltd, St. Austell. The June 1960 edition lists this record, and all others, as 45 only (9115-9132). All records have a 3 letter prefix, with variations in the third letter.

The July issue lists all records (9133-9156 with 3 letter prefixes) as 45rpm only.

The May issue lists 9094 - 9114 with 3 letter prefixes, but only 9104 (Duane Eddy: Shazam/The Secret Seven) is listed as available as 78rpm.

The prefix guide in an earlier (Dec 1956) edition states:
Various additional letters (U,N,A,F,J,D,C etc.) are added to the prefixes of these London records. These added letters are part of an "export availability" code adopted by the makers and they do not affect the price.

The 'Gramophone' Popular Record Catalogue Vol. 7 (April 1960 - March 1961) also lists this as 45rpm only.

That’s an interesting idea that the records were pressed for export. Unfortunately the list of countries still hasn’t been posted on the RIS website.

The "interesting site" Link given below about late London 78s appears to have been written in 2011 and relies on information given in the Record Information Services London singles catalogue by Paul Pelletier published in 1982. I note that the RIS website has recently updated information on the late London 78s, http://www.record-information-services.info/corrections/london_additions.html, and concludes that this Eddie Cochran coupling was NOT issued as a 78, along with several others previously thought to be so in that 1982 publication (and which, incidentally, the website says has just been reprinted because of demand).

As far as the rarity of late UK London 78s is concerned, apart from the obvious breakage factor and probably relatively small batches pressed, UK collectors overlook the fact that UK London pressings were exported to various other countries (hence the variable 3rd letter on the HL catalogue number prefix) and it may well be that the late UK-pressed London 78s were primarily for export, although made available to UK record shops if ordered. By 1960, 78s were associated with people living in areas without an electricity supply and thus relying on wind-up gramophones, and if UK-pressed late London 78s were ending up in such "primitive" places mostly overseas, then no surprise they cannot be easily found, if at all, in the UK. I have contacted the RIS website and asked if they have any idea to what countries London records were exported, I have been told to expect a list, circa 1960, to appear on the London Corrections page shortly, which may give serious collectors some holiday ideas.

The Rare Record Price Guide 2018 lists this as worth £400 in mint condition. Should this entry really be marked 'unreleased'? No one seems to have admitted to categorising it as such!

Glad it was of interest, I emailed the site but there was no reply. Paul Pelletier is very fastidious in his research and wouldn't have marked this record as being released without good reason for thinking so.

Thanks mister_tmg for what, for me at least, was a very interesting Link listing later London 78's. Certainly adds to the "Unreleased" debate.

Paul Pelletier's "London American Singles Catalogue" does list this record as having been issued on both 45 and 78 rpm. It has been listed in the Record Collector Price Guide, although I don't know if it currently is. Paul thinks that information would have come from him anyway. I got in contact with Paul and he thought that Decca's trade deletion sheets might have the answer if he found his copies of them. I can't see any evidence of the record online, although of course that isn't conclusive. I'm still curious as to why this record was marked as "Unreleased" - both VinylSid and Tony P say it wasn't them who entered it as such! There's an interesting site with a listing of later London 78s, which omits this one from the list. Link

But you probably had a reason / some evidence for the existence of this record when you created this entry in January 2013, VinylSid, didn't you?

Hi mister_tmg. Apologies for delay - just seen your message. I have no idea about this entry. My catalog of London 78's doesn't mention it either.

Why is this marked as Unreleased? There's conflicting sources as to whether this came out on 78rpm but I haven't seen one in person or online. VinylSid, please tell us...
