| | Quote from Greg Butler in an old Guardian article:
"If you have a mint condition 78 of Elvis singing Mess of Blues, that will be worth about £1,000,"Butler says. "Roy Orbison's Only the Lonely on a 78 would probably fetch £400. That's what is so fascinating about this. All over Britain, there are families with 78s stuck in their lofts gathering dust. In many cases they are sitting on a gold mine."
Snap, crackle and pop
I think Greg is probably just citing the RRPG value there though. |

| | The new RRPG book lists this at £400. I’ve written to the editor suggesting they remove it, as there’s no evidence it exists. It also lists the following:
Jimmy Jones
1960: MGM MGM 1078
Good Timin’ / Too Long Will Be Too Late (78)
£80
Eddie Cochran
1960: London HLG 9115
Three Steps To Heaven / Cut Across Shorty (78) £400
Johnny Preston
1960: Mercury AMT 1079
Running Bear / My Heart Knows (78)
£40 |

| | But there’s almost no evidence it actually exists. The member here who claims to have the record has failed to produce it after several years. |

| | I think the only person that might have bought this would be the far end of Scotland or somewhere like that. The 45 collection I acquired had a good few 78s in it ,but the London (town) owner had a fairly clear 1957ish cut off for switching to buying 45s with only a few 78s that were either parents or only on 78 at time of issue. Unfortunately my friend who worked at Decca in Battersea was on radar/radar parts rather than discs so I cannot ask him if he remembers. |

| | Finally, there is some evidence for this record - the Decca Group Catalogue lists it as "also available on 78". The annual hardback books would seem to be definitive. I checked the book which covers up to September 1960. This was listed as 45 rpm only. But knowing it was still climbing the charts (it reached the top 10 W.E. 22 September, and #1 on 20 October), I decided to check the next volume. Yes, this record is listed as available on both 45 and 78. It's apparent that Decca must have decided to press a 78 due to increased demand. It would still be great to have confirmation it exists, but a contemporary catalogue is quite strong proof I'd say.
However, there’s something amiss. The 78 symbol is shown in the Song Title Index for Only the Lonely. It is not shown next to the b-side, Here Comes That Song Again, nor next to Roy Orbison in the Artist Index. This leaves further room for doubt, although one of our members does claim to have a copy. |

| | 'The New Records' also suggests a 78rpm version wasn't available in the UK - see my comment here. |

| | Well, the dealer never did get back to me but our own lorangrecords says he has this record. However, Paul Pelletier’s corrections to the London Singles catalogue says there is no evidence it exists. |

| | That it has been listed in RRPG is not complete proof that this was actually released on a 78 in the UK, we will have to wait to see if anyone has a label image |

| | The Rare Record Price Guide 2018 lists this as worth £400 in mint condition. (I think it was £500 in the past!) |
