rhythmdog 14th Oct 2023 | | 78 RPMBurian Trio - There's A Half Moon On The Hudson / Stop Being So Beautiful (1938) | I do not know what the label should be called. See the design. One one of these discs the blank side is shown to be an Allied Phonograph Record Mfg Co. Radiodisc.

rhythmdog 8th Oct 2023 | | 78 RPMThe Enchanters [Coral] - There Goes (A Pretty Girl) / Fan Me Baby (1957) | The original 45 release of this record was May 20, 1957. "There Goes (A Pretty Girl)" has a spoken intro that somewhat recaps the spoken riff in the Velvetones' "Glory Of Love". It had matrix number 100,974. Possibly for copyright issues, the first part of the tune was edited out. It is this edited version that is on the 78. No copies on 78 of the long version have shown up so far - if they exist, they would have been issued in May and then replaced in August.

they have definitely generated more comments than might be expected...

rhythmdog 5th Oct 2023 | | 78 RPMTV Slim - The Fight / Darling Remember (1955) | That 1957 recording date is for a different version of "The Fight" and for a different recording of "Darling Remember". According to CD liner notes by researcher Ray Topping regarding the Shreveport, LA scene and the labels of Mira Smith, who owned Red River Records and Clif Records and who recorded TV Slim on "Darling Remember" b/w "Flat Foot Sam" for Clif, that version was a re-recording made in "early 1957". The liner notes show these sides as published in 1955, although they don't specify the release date of the 78. It is known that the "Joe Young" on the two sides is the same person as "Mighty Joe Young", who did move to Chicago in 1956, so the 1955 date is plausible.
I found the recordings on an Ace CD, "Red River Blues", and they are quite primitive and not the same recordings as the better-known takes. On the CD, they are clearly taken from a V condition or worse original...
The liner notes also mention a second early release on Speed as Eddie Williams on piano, with vocals by TV Slim, with "The Fight" backed with "Goin' To Calif." from 1956. A 45 of those two sides exists, although based on the label style I believe it to be a later reissue of those two sides. It is stated that the second release is Speed 6864 and that it is from 1956, but it seems even rarer than this one, with no recorded sales and no available images.

I don't know how that happened, truly. I had been educated by him on several other recent additions to the site, is all I can say.

rhythmdog 25th Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMSallie Martin And Her Singers Of Joy - He's A Friend Of Mine / You Know Lord Whether I'm Right Or Wrong (1948) | Once again, han, I must thank you for the link to a site not previously known to me! As to whether or not the B side label exists, here is where I got the B side title, and I would think the seller would have mentioned that the B side had a different label than what played if it were the case.
rhythmdog 25th Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMThe Five Scalders - If Only You Were Mine / There Will Come A Time (1954) | The pioneering rap label that no longer exists likely named for a neighborhood of Manhattan, I would guess. I did think this would prompt comments!
rhythmdog 25th Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMThe Martin And Morris Singers - On The Jericho Road / I Know I Have Another Building (1948) | That is what I expected myself, that they would be the same. If anything, the A side has more specific Sallie Martin involvement.
rhythmdog 24th Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMT. V. Slim And His Heartbreakers - Flatfoot Sam / Darling Remember (1957) | There have been a couple of sales at popsike, but unfortunately, in both cases the seller just put up an image of the whole 78, thus way too small to provide us with an image.
For what it's worth, the two 78's on the label seem to have identical typeset to the corresponding 45's.

rhythmdog 24th Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMGladys Bentley Quintette - Boogie'n My Woogie / Thrill Me Till I Get My Fill (1946) | I would assume the Exclusive release is first, given Rene writing credits on the B side.

rhythmdog 23rd Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMThe Sallie Martin Singers - Jesus I Love You / Get Away Jordan (1948) | This could have been released as late as 1949, but Leroy Hurte stated he moved to New York in 1950, and also that he pretty much wrapped up his Bronze label in 1949.
rhythmdog 23rd Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMSouthern Gospel Singers - I Need Jesus On My Journey / Any How (1948) | Given that Sallie Martin moved to Los Angeles in 1948 to establish a branch of the publishing house Martin & Morris, 1948 is the likely release date.
rhythmdog 23rd Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMThe Martin And Morris Singers - On The Jericho Road / I Know I Have Another Building (1948) | According to one not terribly reliable source, the artist listed on the B side is "Sally Martin Singers".

rhythmdog 23rd Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMFive Scalders - Girl Friend / Willow Blues (1955) | I think, based on both label design and matrix numbers, that this was more likely from 1955 or even 1954 than 1956.
rhythmdog 23rd Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMThe Five Scalders - If Only You Were Mine / There Will Come A Time (1954) | If I were forced to guess, I'd guess that for some reason the label decided to rename itself as "Drummond". This is the first press, but there aren't any other differences except the label name.
rhythmdog 23rd Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMThe Voilinaires - Another Soldier Gone / Joy In The Beulah Land (1953) | This might well have not come out until 1954, based on the lower matrix numbers (300, 301) which are on The Five Scalders, which came out in 1954. Also, the alternate version put out on Swing Time and on Question as by "The ? Marks" is from 1954.
rhythmdog 23rd Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMThe ? Marks [Hollywood Flames] - Go And Get Some More / Another Soldier Gone (1954) | According to Marv Goldberg
Quote:
There was a second release on Swing Time in February 1954, and it's a mess. One side is "Go And Get Some More" (clearly led by Bobby Byrd).
And his information is based on interviews with several former Flames. Sorting out L.A. vocal groups is a hot mess, however, as they all sang on each others' records and also all made all sorts of claims to interviewers who did the interviewing at least 20 years later.
rhythmdog 23rd Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMThe ? Marks [Hollywood Flames] - Go And Get Some More / Another Soldier Gone (1954) | The B side is not by the same group as the A side. A side is The Hollywood Flames. B side is an alternate take of Drummond 4000 A side
rhythmdog 23rd Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMThe ? Marks [Hollywood Flames] - Go And Get Some More / Another Soldier Gone (1954) | Image courtesy of Marv Goldberg's history of The Hollywood Flames. The "A Side" is actually the B Side, and is not by the Flames, but is rather by a Detroit group, The Voilinaires - it is an alternate take to that release. The "A+ Side" is by the Hollywood Flames.

rhythmdog 22nd Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMPeppy Prince And His Sugar Men - Sugar Man (Part I) / Sugar Man (Part II) (1950) | Listed as by "Peppy Prince And His Sugar Men" to allow linkage to The Flames, a/k/a The Hollywood Flames discography. Images to come.
rhythmdog 21st Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMPeppy Prince - It Must Have Been A Dream / Stomp Mr. Jackson (1947) | This also seems to exist with the listed A side as the B side and a different A side called "Smiling Through" - shown as 227-A on the "Sample" label.
To be more clear: the listing names the other (B) side as "It Must Have Been A Dream"
rhythmdog 21st Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMLowell Fulson's Combo - Everyday I Have The Blues / Rocking After Midnight (1950) | I have to guess that for unknown reasons, Jack Lauderdale either held back both this and the next release on the label for about a year, or else he just used older numbers. The two are way out of sequence - but there are lots of others out of order in his family of labels.
The 45, which likely wasn't pressed until much later since the earliest known 45 on the label is from March 1951, shows the artist as "Lowell Fulson", not "Lowell Fulson's Combo", so I think most likely the first way this came out was "Lowell Fulson's Combo".
rhythmdog 21st Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMLowell Fulson And His Trio - Come Back Baby / Country Boy (1950) | Copies exist with "Swing" Records on one side and "Swing Beat" on the other side. See link under linked 78 below.
