rhythmdog 27th Nov 2024		78 RPM His Grace King Bishop Louis H. Narcisse - Whole World In His Hand	Opinions vary as to the release date, with some sources claiming a 1964 or even 1965 date. However, the label logo strikes me as indicating 1959 - identical to the design on Music City 78-819 but definitely done after Laurie London's hit of 1959.

Narcisse called "It's So Nice To Be Nice", with vocal arrangement on one side and instrumental version on the other.
rhythmdog 26th Nov 2024		78 RPM Theola Kilgord - Look To The Hills / Give Me Wings Lord (1954)	In notes accompanying a CD of King Louis H. Narcisse, "It's So Nice To Be Nice", the date of the recording and first release on the Ajax label of this single is given as 1955. However, two later releases on this label are shown here as dating to 1954; obviously one or the other source is off by a year.
rhythmdog 24th Nov 2024		78 RPM 15 Year Old Alice Jean - 100 Years From Today / Come Back Home (1957)	This appears to have been pressed in February of 1957 based on the delta numbers: Δ 14394 for "100 Years" Δ 14395 for "Come Back Home" However, it wasn't reviewed until June. In May, there was an announcement that Don Barksdale had "formed" the Rhythm label and that he had "two decks" in the stores, this being one of them. Trouble is, the label had already existed for a decade. I think he purchased the label name from Bob Geddins, and that it happened in late 1956 when the Pee Wee's All Stars record came out. The label had been dormant since 1954 before that.

rhythmdog 6th Jul 2024		78 RPM Eddie Miller And His Oklahomans - Release Me (And Let Me Love Again) / Motel Time (1950)	This is the first release of the oft-recorded song "Release Me" by its writer. Also done by Jimmy Heap, Ray Price, Esther Phillips and Engelbert Humperdinck, among others.
rhythmdog 20th Jun 2024		78 RPM The Four Kings [Jax] - Do You Want To Rock / You Never Knew (1954)	Quite a rare record. The image above is of the sole sale recorded on the internet. The group is the same group as Bobby Hall & The Kings, but with Adolphus "Little Hooks" Holcomb taking the lead on both sides. Marv Goldberg has a bio of the group, and he supplied the date for this obscure record. Unlike all three preceding releases on Jax, this one never came out on 45 - possibly because the Jax and Sittin' In With labels were on the verge of going out of business.
rhythmdog 1st Jun 2024		78 RPM The Chords [Gem] With Frank Motley And His Crew - Daddy Loves Mommy / In The Woods (1954)	Ferdie Gonzalez gives a date of August, 1953 for this release. It is likely the date the sides were recorded, as starting in September, 1953, Frank Motley et al embarked on an extensive tour of the South which wound its way back north and ended in Pennsylvania in December. Both this record and the preceding number on Gem (which was released at either the very end of 1953 or in January of 1954), as well as at least one other, were purchased from Liz Claiborne for release on Gem.
rhythmdog 1st Jun 2024		78 RPM Frank Motley (Duel Trumpeter) And His Crew - What's That Stuff Joe's Got / Keep Your Head Up High (1953)	December, 1953 is Marv Goldberg's guess, based on the fact that the recordings were mentioned in "Records Released This Week", in Jan. 9. 1954 Billboard. Seems reasonable, but it doesn't fit well with the release date of Gem 211, which was August of 1953 according to Ferdie Gonzalez. Likely one of the two dates is incorrect, and with the date here being corroborated via a trade paper, I'd guess that Gem 211 actually didn't come out until 1954.

rhythmdog 9th May 2024		78 RPM The Four Barons - Lemon Squeezer / Got To Go Back Again (1950)	It is actually a lot crazier than jmontague42's description of events: you can read all about it in Unca Marvy's (Marv Goldberg) article about The Larks. In fact, on the very same day, October 5, 1950, the soon-to-be Five Larks recorded seventeen different masters for four different record companies (Jubilee, Regal, Savoy/Regent, and Apollo) using four different names! These two sides by The Four Barons were amongst them, and were the earliest secular titles released by The Larks. By the way, the group on that day was a sextet, not a quartet...

rhythmdog 30th Apr 2024		78 RPM The Orioles - It's Too Soon To Know / Barbra Lee (1948)	From a write-up about the songwriter, Deborah Chessler in Discogs: Quote: She began to manage the Vibra-naires, a group that would become the Orioles. She got them booked on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts TV show, where they came in third but were a popular success. Their first record, a single called "It's Too Soon to Know," had been previously recorded by Savannah Churchill. The group's version of the song, which came out in June 1948, was considered one of the first rhythm and blues songs... The It's A Natural single was also pressed in a purple label color, and eventually was put out on Jubilee, probably in November of 1948 at the same time as Jubilee 5001 was released. Widely considered the first rhythm and blues vocal group hit; sometimes called the first rock and roll record. It was also ground-breaking in that Deborah Chessler, a Jewish woman, was managing an African-American vocal group at a time when the industry was rigidly segregated.
