Scratchy45 11th Jun 2023 | | 78 RPMSergei Rachmaninoff And The Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra - Concerto No.2 In C Minor, Op. 18 (No. 1/10) (1933) | Apols if lack of images on 1336/7 confused things. Will be added in due course. So far as I know I added title descriptions exactly as per the labels but will check. They use the term "record" for each new side of a movement, resetting to 1 as each new movement starts. The discs themselves are labelled in sequence as you would expect.

Scratchy45 6th Jun 2023 | | 78 RPMSergei Rachmaninoff And The Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra - Concerto No.2 In C Minor, Op. 18 (Record 9/10) (1929) | Concluding disk of D.B. 1333/4/5/6/7

Scratchy45 6th Jun 2023 | | 78 RPMSergei Rachmaninoff And The Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra - Concerto No. 2, In C Minor, Op. 18 (Record No. 3/4) (1929) | With my pedant's hat on, the artist name on the labels here says "and" not "with" - albeit in slightly different layout from the other "D.B.1334. I suggest they need to be merged, retaining the correct title text here for sides 3 and 4 as well

Scratchy45 4th Jun 2023 | | 78 RPMDennis Noble - I'm The Factotum (The Barber Of Seville) / Prologue (Pagliacci) (1940) | whitewhale 1965 - since the recording session date is the 8th of December 1939, it would have been a bit of a stretch to also release this in1939. That date from the Kelly Database

Scratchy45 20th May 2023 | | 78 RPMRoderick MacKinnon - Gaelic Songs Part 3 / Part 4 | The singer's Gaelic name is Ruairidh Iain Bhàin.
The recording date for track 1 is believed to be March 1938 if this online audio matches https://www.tobarandualchais.co.uk/track/39313?l=en

Scratchy45 14th May 2023 | | 78 RPMRoderick MacKinnon - Gaelic Songs Part 1 / Part 2 | There's quite a story behind this series of in-the-field recordings, almost certainly recorded a long time before this issue :

Scratchy45 10th Apr 2023 | | 78 RPMRay Noble - With All My Heart / The Broken Record (1936) | Agreed, xiphophilos. Too often it seems to be the one most interesting.....
|
Scratchy45 10th Apr 2023 | | 78 RPMFolk Dance Band - The Old Mole / Newcastle (1938) | I think this is the first time I've seen a paper hole-punch reinforcer used to mark one side of a disc. Could be worse....
|
Scratchy45 8th Apr 2023 | | 78 RPMRay Noble - With All My Heart / The Broken Record (1936) | Bearing in mind the title of side 2 , just guess how I found this 78 on removing from the highly decorative shop sleeve to scan...
|
Scratchy45 1st Apr 2023 | | 78 RPMCapt. Ernest George Pretyman - The Navy / The Navy (1920) | I'm guessing this and the Churchill recording mentioned would not have been of a "live" public address. Can anyone confirm? I am aware that early "mobile recording equipment" was required to capture reluctant musical artists like Madame Adelina Patti around this time in the early 20th Century.
For the record, original D380 recording date is November 1918, D382 previously released on cat# 01024 about a decade before that (Kelly)

Scratchy45 5th Mar 2023 | | 78 RPMMayfair Dance Orchestra - Calicoco / Money Blues (1919) | First time I've consciously seen the label description "Orchestra (for dancing)" on a His Master's Voice release.

Scratchy45 18th Feb 2023 | | 78 RPMLos Andrinis - Tango Verde | Thanks you for correcting,.xiphophilos a discogs contributor couldn't get the name right either (in a different way). https://www.discogs.com/release/7282376-Los-Adrinis-Typical-Latin-American-Melodies

Scratchy45 18th Feb 2023 | | 78 RPMArthur Lally - My Heart Is Where The Mohawk Flows Tonight / The Queen Was In The Parlour (1931) | Lives up to the "flexible" label description...
|
Scratchy45 18th Feb 2023 | | 78 RPMLos Andrinis - Tango Verde | Not a very informative label - a test or promo pressing blank with a paper label attached. Information comes from Kelly database on matrix number search. Recording date 20th May 1954 matches, so title taken from there, where the name R. Romero is given as composer. Unplayed as yet, as in a pretty filthy state..
|
Scratchy45 15th Feb 2023 | | 78 RPMAdelina Patti - Voi Che Sapete "Nozze Di Figaro" (1906) | Had almost forgotten about this - a disc seen hanging in a glass case in one of the public rooms in Adelina Patti's one-time-abode: Craig-y-Nos Castle in the upper Swansea Valley, Wales.
I believe it may be one of the recording made by her late in life, by dint of taking the recordist and recording equipment to the artist at home. I'd better look out the book I have which details the recordings made there.

Scratchy45 13th Dec 2022 | | 78 RPMFrancesco De Pinedo - Messaggio Agli Italiani All'estero Del Colonello Francesco De Pinedo Comandante Del Santa Maria Parte 1a / Messaggio Agli Italiani All'estero Del Colonello Francesco De Pinedo Comandante Del Santa Maria Parte 2a (1927) | My curiosity was whetted by this one. Artist was a trail-blazing Italian military aviator. The release year matches up with his long-distance continents-spanning journey by seaplane, which included the United States. Search Wikipedia for the name for more details.

Scratchy45 27th Nov 2022 | | 78 RPMBrowning Mummery - Recondita Armonia (Strange Harmony) / E Lucevan Le Stelle (When The Stars Were Brightly Shining) (1928) | Both from "Tosca"
|
Scratchy45 1st Nov 2022 | | 78 RPMSymphony Orchestra - Symphony No. 6 In B Minor (Pathétique) (1927) | I'm sure in a couple of cases I've bought mixed lots which include a full sequence from a set/album but made up with discs from two separate releases.
I guess thinks like the following may have happened:
(1) individual discs were bought by customers as replacements for broken discs
(2) retailers may have found the only way to shift an incomplete album/set was to buy up the freshly-numbered reissue to add into the sequence.
(3) Buyers may have done the same, by dint of ordering "fill-ins" to match up with incomplete disc sets/albums they or a retailer held. .

Scratchy45 30th Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMHelene Pignari-Salles, Germaine Leroux, Nicole Rolet And Piero Coppola - Concerto For Four Pianos And Orchestra (1934) | Sources suggest originally written for four harpsichords and orchestra. Disc 1, sides 1 and 2 of the two-disc "set" which concludes with side 3 of D.2111 - audio available at the british library sound archive - here

Scratchy45 30th Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMJoe Loss - Paul Jones (1952) | To be fair I've only found a couple - and it's totally possible they could have been from the same collection. People can do the strangest things though - for example add pads to a label (something to do with autochanger play, perhaps).
|
Scratchy45 29th Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMJoe Loss - Paul Jones (1952) | Label scans added. This had been sitting waiting to be scanned for some time. I found it was host to a parasite or symbiote (to use biological analogies). A Cliff Richard flexi-disc from 1960 had been taped to one side, and it's possible another might have been on it at some time by the almost identical tapemark traces left on the other side. I'm rather more used to finding a cracked shellac disc with another shellac glued to it so at least one side remains playable.
