TheJudge 17th Oct 2020 | | 78 RPMThe Silver Stars Band - Stars And Stripes For Ever / Under The Double Eagle (1915) | A belated reply, but 'we' were at war with Austria-Hungary as well at that time.
TheJudge 14th Oct 2020 | | 78 RPMThe Philadelphians [US] - You Brought A New Kind Of Love To Me / Around The Corner (1930) | (Answers self: almost certainly not. Artist name changed)
TheJudge 13th Oct 2020 | | 78 RPMThe Philadelphians [US] - You Brought A New Kind Of Love To Me / Around The Corner (1930) | I shouldn't think this is the same band who recorded for UK Eclipse between 1928 & 1935. Is it?
TheJudge 25th Sep 2020 | | 78 RPMFrank Lee's Tara Ceilidhe Orchestra - The Irish Washerwoman / Miss McLeod's Reel | The label design would put it somewhere after the beginning of 1942, with the label in its initial run ending in 1948. This was one (presumably the first or second release) of the label's 'Irish Series'.
TheJudge 12th Sep 2020 | | 78 RPMJohn McCormack - Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms (1911) | I'd raise this on the 78s forum, Mike. There does seem to be some confusion over this. My instinct would be to create a new entry under Victrola and transfer the image across to it, but someone in the forum may be able to clarify the relationship between original Victor releases and the (apparently) later Victrola ones.
TheJudge 3rd Sep 2020 | | 78 RPMMiss Jones And Mr. Spencer - Flanagan's Night Off (1906) | Made in US for sale in UK. By our lights, that would make it a UK release
TheJudge 29th Aug 2020 | | 78 RPMThe Gilberts - Carolina In The Morning / Our Little Garden Subbub (1923) | Would these be the same as The Two Gilberts, who also recorded for Regal at this time?
TheJudge 22nd Aug 2020 | | 78 RPMW. Duncan - By Jingo / He'd Say "Oo La La, Wee-Wee" (1920) | Matrix #s are the same, so it'll be the same recordings under different names.
TheJudge 19th Aug 2020 | | 78 RPMBrammer Brother's And The Virginia Partener's - Tell Me Truly Little Darling / Virginia Waltz (1950) | The default sort order is by date, so this being shown as '1950' would put it top. Are you saying that this is a 1951 release?
TheJudge 1st Jul 2020 | | 78 RPMGracie Fields And Sandy Powell - Gracie And Sandy At The Coronation Part 1 / Gracie And Sandy At The Coronation Part 2 (1937) | Parts 1 & 2:
[YouTube Video]
TheJudge 11th Jun 2020 | | 78 RPMMr. James Hudson - Miner's Dream Of Home / Don't Go Down The Mine, Dad | 1. Of the three others, one had had the dot missed off on submission, and two don't have images to check. I've converted them all to the same format as this entry, so that will put all of Mr. Hudson's releases together.
2. I'm not quite sure of the standard procedure on this; may best to but the B-side cat# as the 'other' cat# instead.
TheJudge 8th Jun 2020 | | 78 RPMFrank Chacksfield - Terry's Theme / Limelight (1953) | I just know that I'm opening up a can of worms here, but shouldn't this (and the other two Chacksfield London issues) be categorised as 'export issue'? I know that - even if so - we would have to state the diameter in the Notes (or state 'Export issue' in the Notes and leave the diameter where it is).
TheJudge 3rd May 2020 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - Trains (1937) | Agreed - changed to 'no artist listed'.
(By the way, Cyril the duck had to change his name to Eric when he did backing vocals for other artists due to the exclusive nature of his contract)
TheJudge 12th Apr 2020 | | 78 RPMLizzy Stein Och Gösta Bodin - Säg, Skall Vi Träffas I Kväll Kl. 11? / Lördagsfröjd (1933) | I would say that this is a Swedish release (Polydor did release in Sweden), and whilst the mechanical copyright date may not be accurate, it does seem to fit in cat# sequence with this, which we have listed as being from 1935.
TheJudge 30th Mar 2020 | | 78 RPMBetty Roth, Bill McNamara - That's All That Matters To Me / Everywhere You Go (1949) | Unless the release date is known (even if it's only the year) then the 'Release Date' field should be left blank. It's not a mandatory field.
TheJudge 19th Feb 2020 | | 78 RPMChris Cross - Lies / Congratulations (1948) | I'm afraid that we don't host audio files here. You could try YouTube just in case there's one there.
TheJudge 10th Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMEvelyn Künneke - Egon / Mäcki-Boogie (1953) | Rim text is Danish. Changed accordingly.
TheJudge 4th Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMHardrock Gunter And The Pebbles - My Bucket's Been Fixed / The Little Things You Do (1951) | He got an MG after that...
TheJudge 7th Aug 2019 | | 78 RPMLonnie Donegan - Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavour (On The Bedpost Overnight?) / Aunt Rhody (The Old Grey Goose) (1959) | The vinyl 78s were mostly (if not entirely) on Pye group (or Pye-distributed) labels (Pye, Nixa, Mercury).
TheJudge 21st May 2019 | | 78 RPMRay Martin And His Concert Orchestra - The Waltzing Cat / The Marching Strings (1952) | " Was this not used as theme tune for BBC1 'Top Of The Form' ?"
Yes, It was.
TheJudge 19th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMSally Massey - Death Of The Steenbock Boys / Tribute To Vermon Steenbock | @AdvancingLives2
This isn't a sales site, but someone may be able to point you in the direction you need for sites which may have what you're looking for for sale. In the meantime, I've redacted your telephone number for data protection reasons.
TheJudge 12th Jan 2019 | | 78 RPMJohn McCormack - I Hear You Calling Me (1911) | Don't think you can put it in a comment, but there's no problem in posting it as a new image for the entry; it would illustrate your point about the runout and so is relevant.
TheJudge 21st Jun 2018 | | 78 RPMBernie Knee, Norinne Master, The 4 Cricketones And Orchestra - Little Red Riding Hood / Kiddie Songs | Entry transferred from 45cat, where it was originally submitted by Ade Macrow on 24 Sep. 2012. Images originally uploaded to there by shagger158 on 19 Jun 2018.
TheJudge 20th Jun 2018 | | 78 RPMThe 4 Cricketones - The Three Pigs / Medley Of Favorites | Transferred from an entry on 45cat by jimmyx.
TheJudge 6th Mar 2018 | | 78 RPMSarah Yary (שרה יערי) - Bni Bealonim (1947) | I don't think Bni Bealonim is the artist. The phrase doesn't appear on the B-side, for example. I think that it's the title of the first part of Side A, with 'Avigail' being the second part. A medley, perhaps?
As to the actual artist, I'll have to do a bit more work on that...
Update: The singer appears to be Sarah Yari, but I can't find anything online for an Israeli singer of that name at the moment.
Further update: I've found a recording by Sarah Yary on eBay (here - for the moment. So I think we're on sound ground changing the artist's name to that.
Final comment: I think this is sorted now - unless someone knows better...
TheJudge 12th Feb 2018 | | 78 RPMChoir Of H.M. Chapels Royal - Welcome Yule / Infant So Gentle (1926) | Perhaps because the A-side contains an 'original' work as well as arrangements of other - presumably 'Trad.' - songs.
TheJudge 12th Sep 2017 | | 78 RPMThe Connecticut Collegians - That Goes On For Days And Days / He Ought To Get A Stripe For That (1932) | I can see only one listing for 256 on that list, and it's a different coupling to this entry. He lists this entry under 257 (and there's only one of them as well, as far as I can see), albeit with the tracks listed the other way round (That Goes On... has the lower matrix #).
[I've now switched the track order according to the matrix numbers. Mod.]
TheJudge 21st Aug 2017 | | 78 RPMMrs Gerald Legge - I'm In Love / Luck's In Love With You (1957) | I'm afraid so.
TheJudge 23rd Jul 2017 | | 78 RPMGeorge Formby - You'll Be Far Better Off In A Home / I Did What I Could With My Gas Mask (1941) | 'Gifford, Formby & Cliffe'
TheJudge 14th Apr 2017 | | 78 RPMRagnar Bjarnason - Líf Og Fjör (Wear My Ring Around Your Neck) / Tequila (1958) | You mean the number on the label is wrong, or the number in the entry (H.S.H.-78-38) is wrong?
