Whyperion SUBS 27th Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMSymphony Orchestra - Symphony No. 6 In B Minor (Pathétique) (1927) | I think for 78world the "symphony orchestra" artist credit is better as Symphony Orchestra Conducted by Albert Coates
Likewise although the composer gets the composer credit and the Labels dont make the record title the full name, we all know these really as Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 In B Minor (Pathétique) - Op. 74
So should here the composer be included in the title

Whyperion SUBS 27th Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMSymphony Orchestra - Symphony No. 6 In B Minor (Pathétique) (1927) | I have seen sets with an unrelated side on the last one rather than a blank. I think it was possible to buy individual discs as making up a set took time at the factory, and one could almost order a disc a week from ones retailer as one got paid. (though waiting for the next intermezzo a whole seven days could be frustrating. Actually I wonder if sets would be shipped without sleeves for the retailer to make up into their card sleeves ?

Whyperion SUBS 27th Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMBull Moose Jackson And His Buffalo Bearcats - I Love You Yes I Do / Sneaky Pete (1947) | Thanks for the fascinating history. With respect to family history recycling first/second names to subsequent children, that occurs in my family (including using a name when a older born child had died !) as well as attributing some children to other parents (esp. if it was a young daughter had given birth, the parents - or older aunts - would claim the parentage on christening, etc).
With respect to the oft said "couldn't read music," I suspect folk may claim that as to the detail, I know a lot of music theory and notation (passing my sight reading for violin but failing the rest!), but certain rhythms if I see them I cannot get them right in my head. So it probably means seeing (or creating) a full score for all the colouration played from improvisation or from composing at home or on the road was not done, but some idea of where lower notes are, higher ones, their note duration and just as important, the space between the notes in time would be gleaned from seeing some kind of notation but the detail would come from the hearing and playing back and no doubt some adding in of "it feels right" as the compositions were performed, and that is probably easier by ear than writing, or reading from the dots.

Whyperion SUBS 25th Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMCharlie Kunz - Charlie Kunz Medley Of Strauss Waltzes (1938) | I Understand the Sterno discs were not "good" recordings , and that they were only Piano. Did Decca use the records then "overdub" rhythm accompaniment ) ( 1382 S 3666 + 9 – 2, S 3667 +9 – ) seems to be the Sterno Equivalent of this one . It is interesting that Decca is running on the "S" matrix prefix here for S.3688 / S.3689 ( are those numbers used on any other Sterno disc- presumably somewhere around 1412ish ?)
|
Whyperion SUBS 25th Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMCharlie Kunz - Charlie Kunz Medley Of Strauss Waltzes (1938) | trying to plot if any Sterno did end up on Rex, or if the Rex ones were re-recordings. Most (not all) earlier Charlie Kunz Rex Discs were re-issued (Same Recordings ?) as Decca Charlie Kunz Revivals , Some Decca Charlie Kunz Revivals used titles ( Same Recordings ? ) of Sterno Disc Sides in a mix and match to new pairings.
I have no idea why I though Rex didnt get acquired by Decca ( a mis thought I have probably had since the age of six that no proof will ever shift from my mind !)

Whyperion SUBS 24th Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMCharlie Kunz - Charlie Kunz Medley Of Strauss Waltzes (1938) | I am tempted to link the Sterno disc to this. Did Decca Take over Sterno. This disc has a S matrix prefix (but numbers differ from Sterno, Sterno also has its Matrix numbers upside down (as Decca did on 45s in the 1960s) If I wasnt confused before I am now

Whyperion SUBS 23rd Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMSymphony Orchestra - Symphony No. 6 In B Minor (Pathétique) (1927) | Here is a question. These discs often turn up on their own, sometimes as full albums and sometimes full or part sets. Should the Full Book Set be entered on its own on 78 world as well as the individual discs, or should the Book Set only go on Classical World (and has Classical World ruled that individual discs of a work wont appear there ( though what about Disc 10 which often has the Conclusion of Work 1 and a quick segment or something of a shorter Work 2 on its flip?

Whyperion SUBS 22nd Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMCharlie Kunz - Charlie Kunz Piano Medley, No. D.99 (1950) | To Gilbert, it is generally common for the EP format to absorb two sides of a 78 10in or a 7in single into one side of such an EP.

Whyperion SUBS 21st Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMCharlie Kunz - Charlie Kunz Piano Medley No. D.93 (1949) | One side label implies this is from a box set of 4 discs (8 sides) indicating side 6, the other side does not mention it being side 5 from 8.
All presumably part of the post WW2 UK export drive to the colonies

Whyperion SUBS 15th Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMThe Royal Choral Society And The Philharmonia Orchestra - God Save The Queen / God Save The Queen (1953) | Anyone got images. Presumably recorded for EIIR coronation, etc, the Queen variant not being sung since 1901

Whyperion SUBS 15th Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMEton College Musical Society - Eton Boating Song / Carmen Etonense (1953) | Not aware of a V as a tax code for EMI group UK pressings. Are you sure it is not a mispressed "N" as they (mispressed ones ) are quite common for some reason? Should be from 15 Apr. 1953 to 26 Oct. 1955 = N, with Purchase Tax at a mere 50%. Which matches the release date and probably pressing run of this pairing.

Whyperion SUBS 15th Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMTino Rossi - Serenade / O Sole Mio (1938) | Looks like the swedish ones are on the Sweden entry nicely now.
For the text of " Manufactured For... " it does not give a country of manufacture, would it be Sweden or elsewhere. When EMI Was formed was all the Graphophone Manufacturing in the UK merged into the Gramophone Company, leaving Columbia as a Marketing Name (with revenue from Sales in Graphophone ?). I think I might have one or two in that Swedish ring style , I wonder if - particulary given the text in English, if the facilities were used as overspill manufacturing for general UK sales too.

Whyperion SUBS 15th Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMBerlin Philharmonic Choir - Laudate Dominum / Ave Maria ("Lorelei") (1935) | Dont know, need to see other TT to compare , I cannot see a T on its own clearly embossed.
Given the release date there should be Labels with no tax code and a clear T tax code on them ( but were the first releases a 12in under diff cat number ?)
Discogs Images fill the missing time with a DT (Double Tax) pressing which presumably would have implied that any T pressings unsold remaining after a year of DT would be quite rare ?
Discogs also has a pressing with no apparent tax code (actually two releases with one just showing a nice clear image of the Ave Maria Side

The audio is from a side of Cameo 607 (607-D) which appears American. This would appear to be at least a 2 Disc pack or album , as 607-C appears unrelated as such on the flip.
Supposedly a five min runtime on Cameo , so is that an edit ( is the Cameo disc a 12in one or are they squeezing 5min a side on a 10in . I doubt 1924 for the recording / issue date is correct for Cameo ?
