The original recordings of "Wabash Cannonball" and "Freight Train Blues" by Roy Acuff and His Crazy Tennesseans were made on their second session on October 21, 1936. Contrary to expectations, vocals on both sides were not taken by the leader but by the mysterious Sam "Dynamite" Hatcher who also played harmonica with the group (but left before the next session in 1937). Nonetheless, when the record was released at the end of 1938, "Wabash Cannon Ball", a traditional train song first recorded by both Hugh Cross and The Carter Family in 1929, became Roy Acuff's biggest-ever hit, supposedly having sold already more than a million discs in 1942, at the height of its popularity.

Both sides were re-recorded by Roy Acuff And His Smoky Mountain Boys with Acuff's own vocals on January 28, 1947 and first released on Columbia #37008 (alternative issue, later on Columbia #20034; in contrast, the original Columbia #37008 and Columbia #20197 were reissues of the 1936 recordings). Altogether, both versions of "Wabash Cannon Ball" eventually sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.
