 The Männchen logo was in existence before electric recording, when everything was acoustically recorded, so the microphone wouldn't have been a factor. See 1924-25 Polydor Catalogue

 Tried to find information about the Polydor-Männchen (Little Polydor Man) design, but in vain. Record companies at the time were experimenting with using more than one microphone (usually one for the soloist and one for the orchestra), and the double megaphone may hint at that, but no one seems to know, and I couldn't find the original description of the trademark (Schutzmarke or Markenzeichen) that probably would at least describe the logo.

There is a discussion about attempt to capture the "Raumton" (real space tone) on this German collectors' site, with several photos that show the placement of microphones:

 Did Polydor forsee stereo in 1927 or was it just that sound goes in both ears???
