| | Crumbs... I'll let you break the news to the Cat-ers that the 45 entry is wrong way up then,
(while I hide behind the Sofa when all the fur starts flying).
One thing's for sure... got to be the most notable B-side in history!
Think I'll hold off the linking of other 45s and 78s for now then, as this sure to be an issue with others. |

| | As far as I know, both versions (45 and 78) came out at the same time, although the 78 version was definitely the more common issue in 1955 when the Sun single was released, and that was apparently still the case for the RCA Victor reissue, as only its 78 cat# number was listed in the displayed charts. So your assumption that everything may have changed with the release of the 45 is actually not plausible (although in later years, the majority of the purchasers of the 45 may have regarded "Mystery Train" as the preferable side). |

| | Well I'm wondering if that is necessarily so, as if the 78 was released first, with the one side regarded as the A (or both as time went on), then the release of the 45 may be regarded as having the other side regarded as the A upon it's issue...in which case, it may in fact be correct to list the 78 as having one side as the A, and the 45 as having the other side as it's A.
(Blimey, and I thought these five would be a simple test of linking 45s and 78s!) |

| | I have also added the Billboard C&W Best seller chart for the week ending Feb 15, 1956 (when "I Forgot To Remember To Forget" was at #1 for the first time there). The use of capital letters for both sides in the following week (Feb 22) seems to suggest that the record was perceived as a "double A" from then on (strangely, however, the Juke Box chart used lower case for "Mystery Train" in that week).
In my opinion, we have to decide what is more important: matrix numbers and (presumable) preference of the record company, or preference of the contemporary reviewers and popularity shown in the charts.
Anyway, the decision has to be the same for the 78 and the 45. |

| | So is the 45 wrong then?
...or was this regarded as the A side until the 45 came out, then the other side regarded as the A?
(If you get my drift). |

| | Matrix numbers and make1968's comment suggest that "Mystery Train" was the A-side - as well as a Sun advert in Billboard of Oct 1, 1955.
All Billboard reviews, however, treat "I Forgot To Remember To Forget" as the top side, and this side became the #1 C&W hit in Feb 1956.
Sun ad (with clips of all Billboard mentions) and Billboard C&W charts (for week ending Feb 22, 1956) added. |
