Speaking theoretically, if a guitar can do it, a harp should be equally capable and perhaps more so for having more strings. The harp's biggest drawbacks were probably it's imposing size and the lack of any significant mechanism to project its sound. In the competition for attention, the harp just really didn't compete well with other instruments that gave more bang for the buck, even those that shared some of its drawbacks. Still, you would think that somebody could have come up with a pickup that would solve the sound problem. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some kind of electronic harp these days that isn't as bulky, too.

Marsala and Girard were fortunate enough to have a home base at the Hickory House in New York. It gave them a chance to be heard and probably kept Girard from disappearing into the black holes of obscurity that have sucked up so many other off-beat performers without leaving a trace.

Who would have guessed that a harp can sound bluesy... Very, very beautiful piece.

The A-side composer, shown on the label as Adele Gerard, should rightly have been Adele Girard. Girard was Joe Marsala's wife and one of the few true jazz harp players. The few examples of her work that remain to us provide tantalizing glimpses of a remarkable talent.
