More laughter on the other side of this disc, attributed differently to a small cast of players...

No. The speed was merely a technical matter. See here for some of the history.

Was the 78 speed in some way patented (or conversly the 80) in order to maintain mechanical royalties charges or just to ensure Columbia players were suggested to buyers ?

On most wind-up gramophones, it's no problem at all to adjust the speed up and down.;-)

Actually what is considered to be 78rpm is a little confusing as there were other speeds in use in the early days. I do not know of any electric record players that play at anything other then 78 rpm speed after 78 rpm became the standard, at least in the U. S. If you want to hear 80 rpm speed records at 80 rpm then you need to record them and use an audio program to correct the speed. The difference may not be too noticeable on most. Worth mentioning tho. When I record a record I always correct the speed to adjust for the rpm difference, even ever so small.

This should actually be played at speed 80, not 78 !!

I have a 45RPM version of this somewhere. It's on black label Colombia Records, but I wonder if it has the same catalogue number!

I think this is the 'famous' version that EMI included on their 'Hello Children Everywhere' series.
