"Crazy Blues", though not a pure blues (actually a mix of three verses of 12-bar blues with three verses of 16-bar professional songwriting), has its undeniable merits as one of the first Afro-American (then Negro) record bestsellers. The arrangement with the accompanying musicians playing at full volume appears rather dated today, but Mamie Smith's powerful performance is impressing anyway, and the song builds to a true blues climax, "I went to the railroad / To lay my head on the track".

Mamie's backing band, christened Jazz Hounds on the spot, consisted of experienced black musicians, Dope Andrews on trombone, Ernest Elliott on clarinet, Leroy Parker on violin, and Johnny Dunn on cornet. It is uncertain though who was at the piano - both Willie "The Lion" Smith and the song's composer, Perry Bradford, later claimed to have played it at that session on August 10, 1920.

Here's a page on a blog with a lot of information about Mamie Smith and particularly this recording:
Mamie Smith: The First Lady of the Blues

A brilliant OKeh ad from the time (1920, month not known yet) from another fine blog, OkeH Records 1918 - 1920, has been uploaded here as well.
