xiphophilos 22nd Oct 2022		I didn't know that beautiful Swedish song and just enjoyed a version on Youtube: I had hoped to find a recording of it on shellac. Turns out, there aren't that many. The song was written in 1909, but the first recording of it on Svensk Mediedatabas is from as late as 1945, Sonia Estelle on Sonora 6023. It seems to have become really popular only after 1950.

You know, i love old christmas songs. and i'm looking forward to the 13th of December, Lucia day, something we have here, where Sankta Lucia by Teodoro Cottrau is the first song they sing. My absolute favorite christmas song is a Swedish one called "När Det Lider Mot Jul" or "Det Strålar En Stjärna", i used to sing it as a child when i had a "angelic" voice.



xiphophilos 21st Oct 2022		"Stilla Natt, Heliga Natt" and "Det Är En Ros Utsprungen" are both Christmas songs with original lyrics in German; both are still popular in Germany. "Stilla Natt, Heliga Natt" is "Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht" (Silent Night, Holy Night), written in 1818 by the Austrians Franz Gruber and Joseph Mohr. "Det Är En Ros Utsprungen" is "Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen" (A Rose has sprung up, a.k.a "Lo, how a rose e'er blooming"), a hymn that was first printed as part of the "Speyerer Gesangbuch" (Hymnal of Speyer) in Cologne in 1599 (source) but is clearly a lot older (more info)
