 Hi xiphophilos, some of his Songs had a Little bit a Chanson-character in the melody and rhythm, but that was in the mid sixties. Yes, Udo Jürgens startet his career in 1956. His career height was in Germany in the mid seventies.

 I'd probably call Udo Jürgens a German pop singer. Chanson sounds too much like Jacques Brel or Edith Piaf.

A now rare record, done by Austria's best singer, songwriter, composer and, of course, showman Udo Jürgens. Born as Udo-Jürgen Bockelmann in Austria, he began to record in the year 1956. His first 5 records had been released as 78rpm records. His songs can be classified as German chansons. He sung in German, English and French language in the mid-sixties. He won the European Chanson Contest with his song "Siebzehn Jahr, Blondes Haar" in 1966. These Heliodor records were his very first recordings, and copies of them are now rare records in Germany.
