SeverlyWarpedRecord 16th Jul 2023		Added an earlier pressing of the A side. It’s weird how on my copy on Victor the prisoners song is the B side. That probably means that apex only pressed this record after the prisoners song took off on whatever radio stations were going in 1925

xiphophilos 27th Dec 2020		I was short on time yesterday; now I've listed all the parallel releases. Seems as if your record's runouts list the catalog numbers of all the parallel Canadian releases. Microphone, as I just learned, was a budget label of the Canadian Compo Co., produced only in 1925. Leonora was similarly produced by the Compo Co., but only for export to Australia! The better-known Starr label was pressed and distributed by The Compo Company Ltd. for The Starr Piano Co. of Richmond, Indiana. This is interesting because Dalhart recorded another version of "The Prisoner's Song" for the American Gennett label on October 28, 1924 (released in June 1925 on Gennett 3030 and also on many of Gennett's client labels).



fantasista 27th Dec 2020		Many thanks once again, xiphophilos. In the book you linked, on pg. 244 it lists the A-side (Prisoner's Song) as matrix 5830-2, recorded at NY, c. January 1925, appearing on both Apex 8314 and 8428.

fantasista 26th Dec 2020		As per Steven C. Barr's guide, this Apex 8000 series was taken from Plaza masters, but my powers of research have been inadequate to the task of finding out which U.S. master this corresponds to, as I can't find reference to the other matrix numbers stamped on this disc.
