Not strictly true that an "A" prefix meant only that it was part of an album. 1027 exists with album markings too.
More likely that Mercury decided to drop the prefix thus complicating the catalogue numbering on later pressings

The"A" prefix to "1027" denotes that it was part of FL's first album "FRANKIE LAINE SINGS" - a three-disc album of '78s' (pre-LP days) numbered # A-22. As can be seen, this number appears on the disc together with the Mercury matrix # of each track:
Side A - (OTSSOTS) #601 : Side B - (BTGOY) # 606
These were two of six tracks (# 601;602;603;604;605;606) recorded at the 1946-10-18 session.
The first 3 featured Babe Russin on tenor-sax and Lou Singer on drums ; the latter 3 had Singer on vibes as Russin (according to FL) had to move on to a previously-scheduled appointment. These tracks were not originally intended as 'single' releases ... only as 'album' content; but due to pressure by the 'coin' (juke-box) operators they were issued as such ... minus the "A" suffix. Despite being at variance with the normal "5000" series of FL's other releases, the numbering of the 3 discs (# 1026 ; 1027 & 1028) was retained

This would be the third version of this label I've seen. There were black versions that look just like the red one illustrated here, but with a black ground instead of red. Then there was a blue version, presumably later than both the others, with the stylized Mercury head, a blue ground, and no "A-" prefix on the catalogue number.
