Some of the dates above make no sense at all, and, as I discover upon further inquiry, almost all have been disputed elsewhere.
The dates that make no sense are the 1934 dates for Sides B of 2645 and 2646 and the Jan. 29, 1937 date for Side B of 2643. If those dates are correct, those sides must have been recorded 1-4 years before the rest of the matrix numbers in the same sequence. Versions of these songs were recorded by Decca on Oct. 19, 1934 and Jan. 29, 1937, but they had diifferent mx numbers and they are not the ones that appear on the labels, nor, if I can judge by the take letters that could only have been found in the wax, anywhere else on these records.
According to Tony Russell in Country Music Records, 1921-1942, Oct. 28, 1938 was the correct date for the session where most of these tunes were first recorded for use on this album. Four of the sides from that session were used in the album (as sides 2, 8, 9 and 10), but two of those (2 and 8) were eventually re-made. The version of side 8 reported here was recorded on either April 5 or April 16, 1939. (Take -D from the same dates was also used in some copies of the album.) It is not clear which take of side 2 is represented here. If -A, then the Oct 28, 1938 is correct. If -D, then the date is April 5, 1939.
Per Russell, sides 1, 3, 4 and 6 were first successfully recorded for use in the album on April 5, 1939. Russell says take -D of side 6 was used, so if the disc here truly has the -C take, that would be an addition or correction. Side 5 was re-made successfully on April 16, 1939. Two takes, -C and -D, can be found in albums. Side 7 was re-made at one of the two April, 1939 sessions (which one is not known) and two takes of it, -C and -D, were used.
Six of these sides also appear in Vocalion album VP-2 as Vo 55027 thru 55029.
It is worth noting that two of the illustrated discs appear to come from a different printing of the album than the other three. Note the big gold side numbers on three of them as opposed to the smaller side numbers discretely tucked inside a parenthesis on the other two. I would speculate that the various appearances of alternate takes might coincide with the change in labeling if anyone is inclined to hunt for all of them.
Since this is a 5-record album and #2645 was part of it, both the images and the titles of that disc should actually have been included here rather than being made a separate entry.
I realize, though, that you probably ran out of fields to enter them. Whenever that happens, we are supposed to list the additional track numbers and their titles in the notes, and a moderator will add additional tracks.
I've done that now for this album, downloaded the images from the separate entry, and uploaded them here. I have also added the release date and deleted the separate entry. In addition, I have created additional tracks for all the discs with two tracks.
