 Fixed the translation above!

The real Caruso, by the way, did record "Fenesta Che Lucive", but in the following year, 1913:

@xiphophilos, it is interesting, I would have assumed that these sort of spoken word scenes had a limited shelf life, but based on the copies I've seen, many of them seem to have been repressed over several years, so they must have been reasonably popular. For instance, I found a copy of this record, a dramatic scene about the execution of Cesare Battisti in 1916, originally released in 1919, repressed on a label from 1925-26.

Just a quick note, "gara" is often used to refer to a match or contest, so "A Musical Contest" would be a more accurate translation in this case.

On the A-side, they have a singing competition between the Neapolitans, Piemontese and Lombardians. The Neapolitan song is Funiculì Funiculà, unfortunately I don't recognize the other two.

On the B-side, a doctor on a hospital ship docked at Tripoli is talking to a duchess, who asks how the patients are. He tells her they're well enough to sing along with the accordion all day, so they must be doing quite well. The duchess asks if they might sing a song for her; the doctor agrees, and jokingly asks the boys which among them is the tenor Caruso. They point out one, who sings a Neapolitan song I don't recognize, "Fenesta che lucive" and another Neapolitan song I don't recognize.

Both scenes are set during the Italo-Turkish War (or Guerra di Libia = "Libyan War"), which took place between September 29, 1911 and October 18, 1912:

Interesting that Italian immigrants in the U.S. found their country's colonizing adventure in North Africa so inspiring that this record had to be repressed as late as 1914.
