| | As the disc labels state, both sides were featured in the movie “Rock Around The Clock”. So maybe that has something to do with what was effectively a double A-side release... |

| | The vinyl 78s were designed for standard 78 playing so no change of stylus was needed. You had the best of both worlds - loud 78 format and unlike the shellac, a non-scratchy surface.
Your 45/33 stylus would be probably be wrecked by using in a 78 groove. |

| | Were the vinyl 78's played with a standard 45/33 needle (stylus) or a 78 one? |

| | And I'll learn to check my spelling one day!
Anyway, its only a theory. I seem to remember "Only you" getting a lot of airplay on the Beep around 1956 along with "Heartbreak Hotel" (on programs like "Family Favorites") and then "The great pretender" coming along later. But the release dates tell a different story. |

| | I'll learn my calendar one day.
It does look like Pye's licensing was behind Decca with London whom if the Platters had been associated with them would probably got both singles out within a few months or less of US issue. |

| | According to the link, the EP came out 2 months later. But I think it must have been a licensing problem. "Only you" was released over a year before in the States and "The Great Pretender" over 6 months previously, so when they finally got the problem sorted out they put both songs on the same record. How's that for a theory? |

Maybe it was cheaper to licence two sure-fire hits on one than to sell and produce two individual ones. |

| | That's right. But why were these two huge hits put out together on one record in England. Doesn't make financial sense. |

| | The Pye Group seem to have been making vinyl 78s in 1957, as my copies of The Diamonds' Little Darlin' and Lonnie Donegan's Don't You Rock Me Daddy-O are vinyl, as is my copy of Petula Clark's Alone from the following year. |

| | Pye were producing a thin vinyl 78's....I had a Lonnie Donegan one fron January 1958...not sure when they started producing them
A quick look on internet gives the impression that they started at the end of the 1950's so probably good selling back.catalogue material was also pressed up on vinyl |
