Another 4 song session and originally recorded under difficult conditions for a larger band. All 4 of Hank's sides (this and 512) were re-recorded and some of the first pressings are terrible.

Musically I seem to remember that there are pluses and minuses to both these sessions. I'll need to remind myself and get back. The acoustics are better on the second but I think a couple of the first are wilder with Hank in really great form. Penny's website doesn't seem to mention the remakes but it's late and so I'll sign off.

In his book King of the Queen City: The Story of King Records, Jon Hartley Fox states that "Penny first recorded for King late in 1944 ... his debut release coupled 'Tear Stains On Your Letter' and 'Last Night'", which is nearer to truth, although mid-1944 would be more appropriate.

This is listed by Praguefrank (also on the Official Hank Penny Website) as recorded "ca. March 1945 in the Wurlitzer Music Center, 1509 Broadway, Cincinnati, OH". Although a re-recording on that date cannot be ruled out, it has to be noted that the record with both song titles was already announced in a King ad in the Billboard 1944 Music Year Book, which apparently had a copy deadline in September 1944. So we can presume that all King records listed there (catalog numbers 502 to 507) were already recorded by September 1944. In addition, the King ad (now uploaded here) proclaimed a "Shipping Date December 1st" which might well be. The release dates of these issues (King 502 to 507) have been corrected like that.

Unfortunately the labels of this record are damaged, but you can still see that the B-side has the original label design with the bigger crown and The 'King' Of Them All slogan, whereas the A-side shows the later label design introduced in mid-1946.
