@xiphophilos Based on the May 1945 Popular Mechanics issue, I have to think the "Three Shiftless Skunks" in JEMF, the "Three Shiftless Skonks" in Popular Mechanics, and the "Three Shif'less Skonks" here are the same. They all have similar southern California country musician connections in the mid-1940's. Also, I've found a photo of Happy Perryman's Happy-Go-Lucky Mountaineers and they are wearing the exact same outfits (except for the hats) as those shown in the Popular Mechanics 2nd Skonks pic.

I stumbled across 2 photos of 'Three Shiftless Skonks' in the May 1945 issue of Popular Mechanics, which includes a story about homemade hillbilly instrument technology. They apparently played with Happy Perryman's Happy-Go-Lucky Mountaineers, either on the radio show or with the band. The Skonks had an instrument they called "The Gooch Gadget."

I wonder if these "Shif'less Skonks" had anything to do with the 1946 comedy routine "The Shiftless Skunks" mentioned in JEMF Quarterly 61 (1981) 120.

Both "The Privy Song" and "Beans" were copyrighted by Woodrow Wilson Burch on July 29, 1954.(source) (source 2)
