Notes

Recorded mid-1927; the "78 Online Discography" page says John Ryan is actually Frank Luther on this recording

Thanks, Han. I think this proves satisfactorily that "John Ryan" is used as an alias for Frank Luther here. Mike may also well be right that the name is a collective pseudonym for lots of different artists, not just Frank Luther. I personally just haven't seen the evidence for that yet, and it apparently had escaped Allan Sutton's notice.

GG 4143 - red label variant of A-side added. This has composers as (Braisted-Carter) and is credited as "Sung by Frank Luther". Same mx 2483.

The Discogs profile John Ryan (14) seems to imply that John Ryan was more than a pseudonym used for various singers:

"American tenor vocalist in the early 20th century.
In early 1924, he worked with Jack Kaufman (2) for the Emerson Radio & Phonograph Corporation (Owner of Emerson Records (2)).
He also used the pseudonym James Hatfield (2) on Grey Gull, and possibly Harry Bradley (2) on Radiex (but virtually not confirmed)."

Allan Sutton, in his Directory of American Disc Record Brands and Manufacturers, 1891-1943 also seemed to think that John Ryan was a real person. The same seems to be indicated by Sutton's "Pseudonyms on American Records (1892-1942)."

This could be an error, of course. But then the "78 Online Discography" is also far from error-free.

I think the name "John Ryan" is just like "Jeff Calhoun" being that it was used as an alias for more than one artist, and they both would be really difficult to try to sort out.

In the notes, meant to say ‘John’ Ryan is Frank Luther
