According to the tax code XT, July -57 can be correct, began summer -57, but XT was used until 1959, so who knows.

Neil, what I meant was that I don't think you were wrong at all. If this 78, like the other 78 I linked to, is a later (1958 or later) re-pressing of a best-selling record, then it doesn't disprove your theory at all.

BTW, I do answer to Xip too. ;-)

There was another Parlophone 78 that featured Jim Dale(future Carry-On actor, at the time he made it) but it seems to have been deleted.

@xiphophilos(that's a mouthful!) It conflicts in a way that simply proves my theory was wrong, but I have already admitted as much in my comment of just over 12 hours ago. I was simply amazed to see a pre-1958 issue with "Recording First Published..." printed thereon, assuming perhaps that the 45rpm version also carries "Recording First Published 1957". That's what I really liked about British records. Australian records never had this detail at all through the 1950s and 1960s. Not until the early 1970s did we start to see the encircled 'P' with the year after it, and even then not all labels carried it.

Neil, does this note "Recording first published in 1957" necessarily conflict with your theory that these notes first appeared in 1958? This could be a repressing after all.

For example, Mercury 70893 (The Platters, My Prayer / Heaven On Earth), the original release of this hit from 1956 has no date, but later repressings state "Rel. June 6, 1956" (https://www.45worlds.com/78rpm/record/70893).

Just noticed this 78 has "Recording First Published...." on its label. That shoots my theory about recording year-dates starting in 1958 full of holes. I only came up with that idea after seeing some pre-1958 45s without the "Recording First Published...." printed on them, though not EMI product.
