first of two novelettes published as stand-alone (though obviously linked) stories in astounding science fiction, later collected and published in h/cvr by victor gollancz as the fix-up (possibly no revision of either to fit together, i've not checked; so may be a ''non-fix-up'') novel, "orphans of the sky" (1963), q.v.

the quality of paper used for new english library's h/cvrs of this period is dreadful; the wood-pulp paper was much more highly acidic than the grade(s) generally used for uk p/bs, browned very quickly across the full page, and became increasingly brittle.

caveat emptor!

specialist dealers in secondhand sf, fantasy & horror books quite commonly referred to the publisher in regards to these h/cvr editions as "new english lavatory paper". . .

tim white's cover art is re-used from the 1/1979 new english library p/b, where it is credited to him on the back cover; after they bought the company in 1982 from times-mirror of los angeles (or whoever'd bought them), it was retained by hodder & stoughton for their new english library imprint reprintings.

° - victor gollancz ran what was in effect a separate junior library-aimed sf line of titles often merkin-published as category sf, or as general fiction line, as adult fiction; but they also picked up uk & british commonwealth (usually excluding canada) volume rights to titles published as children's books for this.

exceptionally for victor gollancz science fiction h/cvrs throughout this period, the books they published for this bore illustrated restricted-palette dust-jackets, usually single-colour (and black) on white paper.
