I have yet to read any of this series, but I recall reading somewhere that there is actually a vague connection with the Doctor Who franchise, by way of a crossover character who had been created for a 1960s(?) era episode. Someone can correct me if I am wrong. Newman did go on to write some Doctor Who fiction too, as it happens.

this was the intended first edition, from the originating publisher; however, the publishing group went through some unanticipated major changes, and it appeared after the licenced merkin first edition, under the changed title. later editions append the 40,000 word novella, "aquarius" (2012 & ff.)
