The cover photograph was taken in August 1963 on the roof of The Palace Court Hotel, Westover Road, Bournemouth. It is currently a Premier Inn and I usually walk on past it on the way to work.
Additional note: This book won the 2020 Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction. Formerly the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction, as a celebration of twenty-five years of the book prize a panel are currently reading all previous winners, to decide a Winner of Winners.
