23skidoo 19th May 2020		A few points of interest regarding this book; in it, Pearson creates the fiction that Bond was a real person and that Fleming's novels were (usually) accurate depictions of his exploits. This borrowed the theory in Sherlock Holmes fandom that Arthur Conan Doyle based his stories on the exploits of a real detective. At least one of the Bond book publishers (I forget which) reissued this book as part of its Bond series (it makes a nice follow-up to the series as it references nearly every novel and short story published up to this point - including Kingsley Amis' Colonel Sun). I read somewhere that there was talk of Pearson writing actual Bond novels after this (playing off the conceits of this book), but nothing came of it. Too bad, as Pearson has a nice style in this book and it would have been fun to read a full-out Bond novel by him. Also, some paperback editions use the UK spelling of Authorised.

23skidoo 22nd Jul 2022		@annaloog. I have indexed by copy (1986 Grafton UK) here. Both the title page and covers of that printing use zeroes for 007 for I have used that version. (this comment is from another edition of this book)



annaloog 19th Jul 2022		Yes, I noticed the letter "O" used in place of numeral "0" (zero) ... perhaps from the "double O" designation for licence to kill? I'd think that the "of OO7" bit should be removed from the title. BTW, I mistook the linked edition as Arrow, when the publisher is clearly Century ... one of those senior moment lapses? 23skidoo 19th Jul 2022		Question: is "of OO7" on the title page? It's not on the cover. Also, I'm noticing the various editions are using "oh" for OO7 when correctly it should be zero or 007 - it just looks weird. I have another UK paperback edition I'll be indexing shortly (might be the Arrow one annaloog mentions) and I'll have to see what format they use. 23skidoo 19th Jul 2022		Somewhat interesting to see Pan Books - then-current paperback publishers of the Bond novels in the UK since the late 1950s - publishing a paperback of Pearson's book. Adds a little credence to the story that Pearson could have written followup novels based on the "Dr. Watson/Holmes" conceit of the faux biography.
