| ppint. 10th Jul 2024 | daw books mmpb near-identical first printings sharing merkin-printed covers cover art by h. r. van dongen (signed, credited) b+w frontispiece by jack gaughan (signed, uncredited) 2pp. b+w map of tschai (unsigned, uncredited: reprinted from the ace books mmpb edition) near-meaningless daw books collector no.339 cover price $1.95 (canadian-carcassed copies intended for distribution north of the parallel) cover price $1.75 (wholly merkin-printed copies for general distribution) 160pp. including titles, indicia , b+w map etc. refer to indicia publishing history to see if the carcass of the copy held was canadian- or merkin- printed no priority established nor liable to be, both state first daw printing, may 1979/123456789 and to distinguish from the undated near-identical third printing, which drops the first two digits from the printing number line, was wholly merkin-printed, and bears cover price (? not as yet seen/seen reported: probably $1.75) some copies of this bear a lengthways oval white sticker printed in black stating $1.95 price in canada | |
| ppint. 13th Nov 2017 | o.p. please check indicia p. for printing line number-string of this daw mmpb: if the string of sequential digits starts with "1", it will be the first printing, as well as stated to be may 1979. daw books' third printings (& any subsequent printings) progressively drop digits (and if needs be, add digits to the end of the string, in rising order°), and may not specify a date for any but the first printing. ° - this format was later varied by some publishers to list odd and even numbers on opposite sides of a central "0": but, either way, the system of progressively dropping digits to leave the lowest remaining as the number of printings of a particular edition reached thus far is retained | |
