ppint. 26th May 2022		yes, bookcat shows the earliest-published edition entered as a bookcat item as the primary (modulo some idiosyncrasies of the 45worlds.com system yr hmbl srppnt. doesn't pretend to understand :-) ): not possessing, nor having held, examined & noted details of any of the first editions of jules verne's books, yr hmbl srppnt. does not feel qualified to enter some, any, nor all of them as bookcat items. . . (the earliest-published english language translated editions i've held - and mostly not read - of jules verne's novels are mostly the arco uk h/cvrs; these ''fitzroy editions'' edited by i o. evans were long the only editions (fairly easily) available in the uk. i understand that these are not regarded as being particularly good translations; but in any case, jules verne's original french language texts - and titles - must surely be accepted as definitive, however highly-regarded a translation may be.)



annaloog 25th May 2022		Adding the French language "English title" (copied from the Romanian edition) does link the two, but shows the earlier Romanian ed. as the primary ... this may need some work (or, perhaps, an entry for the 'original' 1879 publication).



OldMod67 25th May 2022		So, as per ppint's comment, is there a way of manually linking with an alternate title (so common with Verne books)? The 2014 edition of this story, for example, a superior translation was published in USA with a title variant, but won't automatically be grouped on adding to the database. Obviously we need to enter the title on the book for accuracy of entry and can't enter by title of its original language as searching will be hampered accordingly. Another option would be to link as a comment, in a similar way to some of the series titles are, for example how ppint did for the Man From U.N.C.L.E. paperbacks.



ppint. 24th May 2022		if the field, ''english title'', is taken as meaning ''title in the original language'' for translations into english, this will allow bookcat to sort these together even if, as with this novel, there is more than one title adopted for english translations - plus, of course, with the original and translations into other languages. translation, presumably out of copyright since the translator is uncredited, of ''les cinq cents millions de la bégum'' (1879), translated into english variously as ''the 500 million of the begum'' (''serialized'' in the seaside library #634, 23/10/1879), as ''the begum's fortune'' (1880 & ff.), as ''the five hundred millions of the begum'' (in omnibus, ''the works of jules verne #11'', 1911), and as ''the begum's millions'' (2005).
