Molly Hatchet - Battleground (2019)
Review
Being a fan of the Southern Rock genre, I managed to see Molly Hatchet on three separate UK tours. Two shows were plagued by poor sound quality but the other was superb.
Although the line up for this doulbe disc package has no original members, it doesn't fail to meet their usual high standards.
Good setlist and the new singer slots right in. Won't disappoint the fans.

Free - Santa Monica Civic Center (2022)
Review
Bought this yesterday from HMV Chester. I already had this concert on a bootleg tape - then burned onto a CD. Typical bootleg quality which was good for the time [1971] ..
Great setlist.
Gave this a spin this morning and found the quality not that much improved from the tape I bought at a record fair in the late 1970's.
However Free were in fine form and you could picture Paul Rodgers strutting his stuff on stage in front of the other band members.

Strictly for Free fans I would suggest.

Rossington Collins Band - Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere (1989)
Review
Being a big Skynyrd fan, I bought this on vivyl as soon as I could lay my hands on it. Lynyrd Skynyrd had a lot of tragedy, - the plane crash, the just before the Rossington Collins Band were to go on tour, Allen Collins' wife suddenly died. There were some British dates earmarked and I was looking forward to seeing them. This album is as good as any of the Lynyrd Skynyrd albums in my opiinion. Every track is excellent and Dale Krantz was in fine voice. I bought this CD in Florida in 1990 and the guy who worked in the record store was a huge Skynyrd fan and I spoke to him about this album and where Dale Krantz had come from as I'd never heard of her. He said that she had been a backing singer only as far as he knew, before joining the Rossington Collins band. A lot of Skynyrd fans were not happy about a woman fronting a band with the remains of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Dale proved them wrong and her vocals on this are excellent. Brilliant Album - In my top ten favourite ablums !!!!

Graham Nash - Wild Tales (1990)
Review
I have five Graham Nash solo albums, and this is his best in my opinion. There are some very well crafted songs on this album. In fact they are all good songs with 'Prison Song' the stand out track for me. And so it goes and grave concern run it a close second. I still give this a spin every now and then. I've made some compilation CDs and MP3s for the car and most of the songs here appear somewhere on them.

Bronco - Country Home / Ace Of Sunlight (2006)
Review
I saw Bronco supporting Free in 1970. Not really heard anything of them before that. I was impressed by them, especially the front man - Jess Roden. Bought the album Country Home the next day. Has some good tracks on it. "Time" and "Well Anyhow" are the stand out tracks. Still give it a spin every now and then. Ace of Sunlight is no better than average with one or two decent tracks.

The Big Three - Cavern Stomp (2009)
Review
About 1963 -64 I used to go on organised bus trips to Liverpool on Saturdays, every six weeks or so. We would leave Caernarfon about 930am and depart Liverpool about 10pm. Three of us used to go to the Cavern Club, The Iron Door Club and other similar venues, depending who was playing and if we could get in. We got to know some of the regular “Cave Dwellers” and “The Big 3” had the reputation of being among the very best playing there and packed them in. When they were on, we just couldn’t get in. They were recorded live at the Cavern and released an E/P which was very good. It appears on this CD. They also made a few singles that were minor hits. Their drummer, Johnny “Hutch” Hutchinson sat in with the Beatles a few times before Ringo joined. It was rumoured that he was offered a permanent place with them. This CD has all of their known recordings from this era. Most are cover versions as they did not write very much of their own stuff. It is very much of it’s time and is well worth a listen if you’re into “Merseybeat”

Yusuf - An Other Cup (2006)
Review
After having played Cat Stevens records from the mid 1960's through to the late 1970's., I thought I would give this a spin and bought it second hand. His output in the early 1970's was excellent - quite a different direction from his 1960's pop records which were very good at the time. The quality started to take a bit of a nose dive after his 1973 album "Foreigner". It was evident that he was disillusioned with the "Rock Star" process, and his output reflected this.

This album has no redeeming features as far as I'm concerned, even the reworking of "I think I see the light" from the excellent 1970 "Mona Bone Jakon" album is very poor by comparison. Perhaps he should have stayed in retirement

UFO - Obsession (1988)
Review
I have most of UFO's albums and think this one is about the best of the bunch. There are two outstanding tracks - Only You Can Rock Me & Cherry. There is also a nice little Michael Schenker Intsrumental to boot. I saw them a few times back in the day and saw them on this tour. I was really impressed with Michael Schenker's guitar work and now have all of his albums. I did see him a few years back when he was a bit of a drunk and couldn't play properly. Very disappointing but I hear he's now got himself sorted

Wishbone Ash - The Vintage Years 1970-1991 (2018)
Review
This is a fabulous package which has been authorised by all the original band members. The studio albums, and the live albums have been re-mixed and re-mastered. This was some task. There are also eight live shows that have not been released previously although some have appeared in bootleg form over the years. Some 30 discs in total. The lavish hardback book is very informative and has statements, comments and anecdotes from all of those concerned. There are some lovely pictures of the lads and several that include promo material, posters, flyers, newspaper and magazine articles.
The poster book has some interesting and rare posters on show. Each box set contains individually signed photos of the band along with some other posters and period promotional material. Well worth having if you're a Wishbone Ash "Nut"

Roger Glover And Friends - The Butterfly Ball And The Grasshopper's Feast (2018)
Review
When this album was first released in 1974 there were some impressive names contributing albeit with a Deep Purple connection in many cases. There are some excellent songs and musical pieces on this and it is worthy of a re-release with lots of unheard bonus material in this box set. I've given it a couple of spins and it still sounds good. It is one of those concept albums, many of them don't work but this one does with it's very good lyrics, artists and good tunes.

Elton John - Tumbleweed Connection (1995)
Review
This was his second album, and still one of his best. Every track still sounds good today. I remember seeing him on the OGWT doing "Talking Old Soldiers" about the time this was released. Brilliant and I had to have it. I had his first album which was OK but this was excellent and it got played to death. One of my favourite tracks "Where to now St Peter" was covered by Ann Wilson (Heart) on her 2007 "Hope & Glory" album. Elton made a guest appearance here doing some of the vocals. He made a series of good albums up until about 1975 when he started to dress like a duck and go "pop". Downhill after that in my opinion with the odd good song, but few and far between..

Blackfoot - Marauder (1998)
Review
Blackfoot were billed as a Southern Rock band. some of the band members had played with and recorded with Lynyrd Skynyrd prior to forming Blackfoot. The first two albums were fairly average rock and the next two were much better. However when this was released in 1981 it surpassed anything done previously. Blackfoot produced what could arguably be the best album of 1981 in Marauder. It was pure rock with a bit of a southern flavour. It wasn't the poor man's Lynyrd Skynyrd. Each track is excellent with a fantastic guitar solo in "diary of a workingman" which for me is the stand out track. I know a few others who love this album and we saw Blackfoot perform a few times in the early 1980's and they gave some blistering performances, creating a fantastic atmosphere in their shows. As PCB5394 commented - another brilliant album

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Collectybles (2002)

There are some very early recordings on this, charting the development of the band and the personnel changes. from about 1968 onwards. A must have for all Skynyrd fans out there.
The booklet has some informative notes and good pix also.

Downliners Sect - The Sect / The Rock Sect's In (1999)
Review
I had these albums as L/Ps back in the day and played them to death. Nowadays they are very much of their time - stuck in the 1960's. There are some tracks that still stand up today however. I have several versions by other artists of "Guitar Boogie" which is also known as guitar boogie shuffle and the version on here is by far the best in my opinion. I did have the first three L/Ps back in the day... but several years ago some unkind person relieved me of two of them along with several others without my permission. Not sure who.... but I have my suspicions. I still have "The Sect" on L/P, perhaps not in the best condition as it's been to lots of 1960's parties and looks a little bit hungover..

Bud Ashton - Swingin' Guitars (2002)
Review
Bud Ashton in fact did not really exist. Embassy Records were sold exclusively through Woolworths. Woolworths was a department store that went bust a few years ago and is sadly missed. Embassy recording artists recorded the hit songs of the day following very closely on the heels of the original records. There were normally two A sides on Embassy records and they were sold a bit cheaper than the mainstream labels such as Columbia, Decca etc. The instrumentals were performed by the session musicians, and released under names such as Bud Ashton, etc. At the time of most of the tracks on this album, my elder brother and myself had guitars and used to play along with the records of The Shadows, Ventures, Outlaws, Fentones, Duane Eddy etc. We had all the singles and also used to buy Embassy records as well to play along with. They were Ok but most were not as well produced as the originals. Being left handed, I used to play "upside down" before stringing up "left handed" a few years later. This album brings back fond memories of that time and is well worth a listen now and then.

Rolling Stones - Blue & Lonesome (2016)
Review
This is a real back to basics album from the Stones, showcasing post war Chicago Blues songs that are nearly as old as they are. It was (allegedly) put together in a couple or three days and is an excellent representation of Keith & Mick's love of the blues. They did visit 2120 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago in June 1964 and in November the same year, and again in May 1965 to record over 20 blues songs that did not get officially released although they have been bootlegged often and there is a version on this site.

Rossington - Take It On Faith (2016)
Review
Brand new release from Gary & Dale Krantz Rossington. They last released an album together in 1988. This is a change from the southern flavoured efforts of the Rossington Collins Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd. This album has some blues, mainstream rock and some good rocking tunes. Dale is is fine voice and should have been fronting her own band for years as she can still rock with the best of them. Track 7 was written by Billy Gibbons and you can hear his influence especially in Gary's guitar style, which picks up on ZZ Top's distinct sound.. A bit surprising really, but well worth a listen.

The Michael Schenker Group - The Michael Schenker Group (2009)
Review
When this album came out in 1980, I thought that the guitar work of Michael Schenker and the drumming of Simon Phillips on the first track (armed & ready) was amazingly good and helped to compliment each other's work.. This is a very good album and has not been bettered by the man himself on any of his subsequent releases. It still gets a spin every now and then.

Spooky Tooth Featuring Mike Harrison - The Last Puff (2005)
Review
This album which was originally released in 1970 contains (arguably) the best "Beatles" cover ever. This issue also has an alternative single version which is nowhere near as good as the album version. The album was greatly underrated at the time and did not sell very well at a time when "Progressive Rock" albums were starting to figure highly in the album charts. All of the other tracks help to make this a very good album that sounds just as good today.

The Ventures - Eight Classic Albums (2013)
Review
This is excellent value at under £8 (Brand New) and comprises the first eight albums that the Ventures released from 1960 -1962. They have been re-mastered and the sound quality is very good considering the price. The fact that there is no booklet or composer credits lets it down a little, but over 100 original tracks is OK for that sort of money. There seems to many other similar packages of other artist in the "Real Gone" series. Maybe worth a look.
