Crowded House - Recurring Dream (1996)
manic marmalade: there was certainly a time (or two?) in the seventies (& eighties?) when a couple of uk music chains desperate to stay afloat imported a container-load or several of both remaindered, and "instant remainder" cassettes from italy; and a lot of the latter looked distinctly dodgy - crappily-printed labels glued & aligned erratically, in shoddily-mfd cassette cases - no "snap" to their excessively-loose closure, so they fell open on the slightest touch, disgorging their cassettes all everywhichway, and poorly- (& cheaply-) printed card inserts - typeset in standard printer's fonts, in black upon a one-sided, one-colour ground, t'other side in black-on-white - or left blank - with no statement(s) of the recordings' sources, prior publication dates, copyright dates, song publication dates, publishers, nor even their writers...

- these may have been exploiting a real loophole in international copyright (etc.) law; but i always assumed that their producers were organised (at least semi-organised !-) ) criminals, and the cassettes either the products of complete copyright piracy, or perhaps infringing the rights of mostly merkin music megafauna, too tardy to take notice in time to tackle the things - the way it's popularly posited apatosaurus (?sp? - diplodocus redesignated) took ten minutes to perceive his/her skin had been punctured.

- and cds are so much cheaper to produce, than cassettes - you can afford to print up a good pirate photocopied front insert, even if it's only one thickness of light card, or paper...

The Liverpool Scene - The Amazing Adventures Of... The Liverpool Scene (2009)
Review
an amazing compilation of an amazing band's adventures in sound, space and meaning - i wish they'd found sufficient space to include "the day we danced at the dole" too - but that's a minor detail, compared with having so much by them available again, so easily - and a lot more affordably, than the original vinyl (if you can find it).

adrian henri was an avid reader of sf, too, and loved damon knight's capsule summation of a.e. van vogt - "cosmic jerrry-builder" !

Van Morrison - The 1967 New York Sessions (2001)
camshaft: yes, i get caught by the medion 7" tablettything's auto-mis-correct bu^W "feature" too, from time to time - and, even more annoyingly, by its auto-mis-correct-after-you've-left-a-completed-word "feature"...

- re tracks 5 & 16 composers-of-record (npi), true composers, etc: bert berns owned bang! (and shout) records, but owed the bank(s) - and some new york bankers were worse than "a right wunch", not too careful about leaving debtors' limbs intact after applying the persuasion. . .
so it's not surprising that he, and others in similar states, strayed over the line of the strictly legal; but adding your own name (and sometimes others', and sometimes pseudonyms of yours) has a long, disreputable history in the music business.

- i don't know whether berns sometimes/hardly ever/never contributed to the compositions and/or their arrangements as recorded for his companies to release: he certainly had sometimes invaluable input in the recording studio on the production side, tightening up the tracks to increase their commercial appeal, as he saw it - not always what van morrison actually wanted, on particular tracks he was laying down - and he certainly affixed his name as (co-)composer to some songs he'd had naught to do with. but what goes onto the published composition gives co-composers - even fictional or fictitious ones - a share of publishing royalties, and "accidental errors" can take decades to sort out (if they ever are), and frequently the involvement of m'learned - and sometimes very expensive - friends, with very thin watches. . .

Van Morrison - The 1967 New York Sessions (2001)
the title of track 17 is almost certainly "I love you (the smile you smile)", not "i looked you (...)";
the composer credit for track 16 "should" read "bert berns, van morrison" - definitely not "beerns";
the composer credit of track 8 should be "traditional, arranged bert berns" or some accepted abbreviation(s) thereof, and definitely not "trade";
the composer credit for track 5 should be "bert berns, wes farrell", and definitely not "sarrell".

The Who - The Who Sell Out (1988)
should prob'ly be re-flagged yeurppean (or possibly yuk?); country of manufacture != country of releasing record co, nor necessarily is a disc legally sold "by way of trade" in the country of manufacture.

there're two groups on "cdcat" by the name of "the goodies"; their personnel didn't overlap much.
(their music is not completely identical, neither...)

Various Artists - The Embassy Records Story
i know that embassy records - almost entirely singles, and almost entirely "sound-alike" cover versions - were sold exclusively through woolworthses in the uk (or, at least, in england'n'wales), for a while (later, non-exclusively through woollieses); but were they not actually set up by the levys of oriole records fame - this was, i understood, how cbs uk came to own the embassy label (which they eventually used as their budget lp line label, not least to maintain ownership of the name by keeping it a live label) - ?

(not a mistake by frank at all, at all; a blooper by the cd's liner-notes-and-blurb writer.)

The Everly Brothers - The Everly Brothers Volume One (2006)
i somehow doubt anyone bought these papers for the freebie cds, which get given to charity shops in their thousands (if not, all at once!), and sold by them at ~50p a time, tops (just as often, 5 or 10 for £1 - or else browsers are asked simply to "make a donation"); but some of them are good, all the same.

Donovan - The Best Of Donovan (1996)
thejudge: i've not suggested they should be rejected: nor am i doing so now; but as it's easier by far for the submitter to enter the composer details - where present - in the original submission, and frequently trivially so, where the great majority of albums' songs are by band members, the singer-songwriter, or by song-writers from a very limited pool or school - mightn't something like an immediate (automagic, even?) request for the submitter to fill in the missing information unless it truly isn't available to them be sensible?

(some submitters seem to specialise in not bothering to provide composers, and so creating work for others, that they could very easily do before submitting albums with the information immediately to hand - and i strongly suspect they're very well aware of this. maybe they're trying to score more points, and faster, than anyone else? might fewer points for composerless submissions encourage them to enter the info?)

Various Artists - The Legendary Joe Meek Presents (2005)
gosh! yet more apparently composerless songs from the collection of this contributor!
(there must've been an awful lot of black magic-markering done on his/her/its collection's lp & cd covers, inserts & labels, to blank 'em all out so comprehensively - mustn't there...)(?)

seeing as how elvis, and his recordings, were sold to the highest bidder also offering elvis a caddilac, by tom parker?

(and oddly, almost all of the songs on the tracks reissued here do in fact have known and acknowledged composers, despite the apparent inability of the item's contributors to list such when submitting albums.)

Kevin Ayers - Original Album Series (2014)
track 2 is given as listed on the disc; all of it, as well as "may i?", were listed as track 1 on the original lp, on emi records ltd's then-live harvest label SHSP 4005 10/70, with "lunatics lament" track 2 et seq; and from "the oyster and the flying fish" on, all but "shooting at the moon" being side 2 track 1, and "shooting" being numbered side 2 track 2, on the lp back cover. . .

- i think it's probably sensibler to go with the numbering on the cd...

part of the kevin ayers original album series, cat# 2564636205

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes (2009)
the attribution of "false knight on the road" to robin pecknold is definitely questionable, in whole or in part, but is implicit in the liner notes & insert assertion that all the music is by pecknold: however, this statement may only've been intended to apply to the earlier one-disc edition.

Dire Straits - Money For Nothing (1996)
gregs78s: "although this is (different), it (is the same)" - ?????!?

"As they're are no scans here..."

- provide me with a scanner here in milnthorpe, and broadband, and i'll gladly provide scans.

- but i've detailed the visual differences in any case, and they are significant - leastways, they are to anyone who gives a damn about the actual music...

(- and, quite aside of the questionable english, the logic of "As they're are no scans..it should be deleted (..)." is crazy - how would the provision of scans alter the fact of this remastered, super bit-mapped edition's existence?)

Robert Johnson - The Complete Recordings (1990)
a reviewing radio dj commented that one of the releases of "the complete recordings" accidentally repeated a take where an alternate was intended, and is listed; does any cdcatter out there know whether it was the merkin columbia, the cbs, or the yeurppean columbia edition, that was the faulty compilation?

my copy is identical save: label now "columbia", top right corner rear insert cat# now a line lower, below (prefix?) col; bottom centre columbia & sony music entertainment inc. & sony music replace cbs; bottom right corner adds cx in a line-drawn box next cdx ditto (save corners of new line-drawn box are sharp), and no. in line-drawn cartouche immediately above now 841.
white-on-red sticker on outside front of package boldy proclaims "features 41 tracks / over 100 minutes of music / plus 60- page booklet" (and "01-467246-10" in minuscule).
cd box could fit in two more discs - or one more, given the insert booklet occupies one's space.

Neil Young - Neil Young (1987)
the reprise cat# of my mfd in germany by record service gmbh, alsdorf copy, purchased new in 2002, is 7599-27444-2, on the disc, the front insert booklet and the back insert (which also bears the bar-code number, 075992744423).
(the original reprise cat# of the 12/11/68 reprise lp, 6317, remains on the front of the booklet - in feint, below the reprise logo ditto, as this is reproduced from the lp cover: but this is not a cat# of the cd.)
