Fokeman 28th Jun 2024 | | CD SingleDavid Gray - You're The World To Me (2007) | It seems that this was issued as a one track single and then a second issue (part 2) CD2 was issued which generously included a second track which had been recorded live. The difference was the one track had pink text and the two track had yellow text.

Fokeman 28th Jun 2024 | | CD SingleDavid Gray - You're The World To Me (2007) | I don't think barcode=commercial release is a universal rule. I know of other promos with barcodes.
Fokeman 3rd May 2024 | | CD SingleDavid Gray - You're The World To Me (2007) | It's difficult to believe that this 1-track cd single was released commercially. One track usually means a promo.
Fokeman 19th Dec 2022 | | CD SingleThe Rogers Sisters - Why Won't You (2006) | This appears to be on the Too Pure label rather than "Pure Records"
Fokeman 11th Feb 2022 | | CD SingleChristy Moore - January Man (2002) | It's so confusing when the recording is made by, owned by, licensed by Newberry Recording, yet there is Columbia and Sony Music and distributed by Sony Music.
Which one exactly is the label here?
Fokeman 18th Aug 2020 | | CD Single10,000 Maniacs - Trouble Me (1989) | Strictly speaking housed in the back of an elephant...
Fokeman 6th Apr 2020 | | CD SingleQueen - Bohemian Rhapsody (Single Version) (1991) | It's bizarre that, under the circumstances, Discogs let so many of the Baktabak product to be sold, but with just a select few, they block sales.
Fokeman 2nd Jan 2020 | | CD SingleJackie Oates - May The Kindness (Now We Part) (2009) | Odd that the arrangement for track 02 is given to Jackie Oates and Alasdair Roberts given that this is exactly the arrangement used by Nic Jones many years previously.
Fokeman 20th Nov 2019 | | CD SingleThe Rails - Other People Other Songs (2019) | Mindsick Blues is very Oasis inspired, methinks. Great Neil Young fuzz guitar too. Wonderful!

Fokeman 21st Sep 2017 | | CD SingleJohn Martyn - Classic John Martyn (1986) | One clue might be the size of jewel case it came in...
Fokeman 20th May 2017 | | CD SingleJimmy MacCarthy - The Contender | Christy Moore recorded Track 01 on his CD "This Is The Day".
Fokeman 16th May 2017 | | CD SingleAndy Irvine And Davy Spillane - From The Album "East Wind" (1992) | Promotional issue to support the sales of East Wind, the album.
Fokeman 16th May 2017 | | CD SingleRita Connolly - Amiens (1992) | The real giveaway sign is the same colour printing of "Promotional Copy Not For Sale" direct to the CD. This is not a sticker or later addition to the pressing of the CD (burning?), but rather integral to the only pressing of the CD which took place. There may only have been 100 or 200 done (see Nimbus and its low number offers) and at the time of the printing on the CD all copies had the "Promotional Copy" printed. These singles were never available in the shops and are pretty difficult to find. If you ever find one, it will certainly have either the promotional information printed on the CD (90%) or a promotional stamp on the insert (9%) or a sticker on the packaging (0.999%) - if you ever find a CD single on the Tara label which has no sign of it being a promotional item, either it slipped through at production stage or someone swapped the packaging over.
I repeat, these were not sold as singles but were used exclusively, to promote the albums they were taken from...
Fokeman 14th May 2017 | | CD SingleRita Connolly - Amiens (1992) | One (possible) way of clearing this up might be to talk to Nimbus, the manufacturer of this CD single. I suspect that the answer we're looking for is that despite the lack of need of barcode on this particular run of singles, it was standard to supply any commercially produced CD with a barcode, regardless if it was actually used or not. Nimbus often do quite small runs for lower budget bands etc. and they would have the know-how to inform the client that whatever your intentions, it is a good idea to supply all product with a barcode to allow any shop or reseller to use a scanner to keep track of what had been sold.
In the case where the client chose to give the CD away to promote a different product, it was no skin off Nimbus's nose and no worry to Tara either. How would they know that 20 years later we'd be scratching our heads trying to work out why it happened?
:-)

Fokeman 13th May 2017 | | CD SingleRita Connolly - Amiens (1992) | My point is simply that you won't find a copy of this anywhere that isn't a promo. You're welcome to try, but since I've spent the last 30 years looking and not found one yet, we can assume that they're all promos. In fact every Tara CD single issued was released to support the sales of the album. Tara 7" 45rpm singles are another matter.
Life's too short, indeed!
Fokeman 11th May 2017 | | CD SingleShaun Davey - From The Works Of Shaun Davey (1991) | Hi BigTom, Pomegranate is stating that the presence of the barcode proves that this is therefore a stock copy not a promo. What are your thoughts on the idea that Tara CD singles were available for purchase as CD singles rather than what I have stated, having spoken myself, to John Cook the MD of Tara that CD singles were only ever used as Promos to support either upcoming or existent Tara album releases?
This is another example of a promo item stamped with "Promotional Copy Not For Resale" printed onto the CD directly and at the same time with a barcode showing on the insert. I would contend that this rather disproves the point that Pomegranate seems to be making!
Fokeman 11th May 2017 | | CD SingleRita Connolly - Dreams In The Morning (1994) | Pomegranate, where do you get this idea from? Barcodes were added to all product systematically by some companies. It allowed scanning for stock control but not necessarily for sales. My source is the MD of Tara, John Cook who told me himself that CD singles were never commercially available and what is more, every single copy of any CD single I have ever seen had a promo stamp either on the packaging or CD itself. After about 30 years of examining, collecting, researching and first hand contact with people during this research, I trust my own experience over your assertion that the presence of the barcode proves it was a stock copy not a promo...
Fokeman 11th May 2017 | | CD SingleRita Connolly - Amiens (1992) | I don't know what your point is? I know for a categorical fact, having spoken personally to the owner of the company, John Cook that no Tara CD single was ever issued as a CD single but only used for promotional purposes and the CD itself is stamped at production point with "Promotional Copy Not For Sale" at the time of the printing of ALL other information on the CD. Such was the business plan of Tara, they did not promote CD singles and all were used to sell and promote the sales of their albums. Each single itself mentions the album it is taken from and the singles were ONLY sent to radio stations and record stores in order to sell the albums.
The presence of a bar code in no way disproves what I am stating.
Fokeman 8th May 2017 | | CD SingleRita Connolly - Dreams In The Morning (1994) | This was never available commercially as a CD single. All CD singles issued by Tara were only ever used as promotional items to promote the album.
Fokeman 7th May 2017 | | CD SingleRita Connolly - Amiens (1992) | "Promotional Copy Not For Sale" shows clearly on the cd - all CD singles issued by Tara were ONLY available as Promos. I have this from John Cook himself.
Fokeman 10th Sep 2016 | | CD SingleLuka Bloom - Make You Feel My Love (2000) | Yes, real name Barry Moore. Some of his work is available under his real name. Treaty Stone on Mulligan Records for example. He also appeared on some of Christy's earlier records and a 12" Anti-Nuclear record.
Fokeman 5th Sep 2016 | | CD SingleMariah Carey - Anytime You Need A Friend (LP Version) (1993) | My copy doesn't have the red print on cd - only larger black Columbia Logo and with fuller songwriting credits on bottom half of cd itself.
Fokeman 7th Jul 2016 | | CD SingleNeil Finn - Wherever You Are (2001) | Is this another one of those occasions when 2 separately available CD singles have been put together into one entry? Can we please separate them into 2 different entries as per the Tim Finn singles "Hit The Ground Running" & "Persuasion".
Fokeman 27th Jun 2016 | | CD SingleDead Flamingoes - Habit (2012) | I can't be sure but it sounds so much like Richard Thompson, Kamila's dad playing guitar on The Jealous Sailor, that I'm willing to stick my neck out and say "I think it's Richard Thompson playing electric guitar on The Jealous Sailor." There, I've said it.
On the other hand, James Walbourne plays a mean electric guitar... so it could be him.
Fokeman 24th Jun 2016 | | CD SingleTim Finn - Hit The Ground Running (Edit) (1993) | Again, 2 separate CD singles which could be bought separately and then put together to make 8 tracks of which 2 were identical.
Fokeman 24th Jun 2016 | | CD SingleTim Finn - Persuasion (1993) | I'm inclined to agree Pomegranate!
Note that when you bought either CD1 or CD2 you got track 1 or Track 5 which are identical, and then 3 additional tracks. So these are two separate individual CD singles.
Fokeman 6th Jun 2016 | | CD SingleMaria McKee - Breathe (1991) | With very obvious Richard Thompson lead guitar from beginning. Sound very redolent of "Shoot Out The Lights" era - RT's guitar that is. Beautiful, moody howling lead guitar on stratocaster.

Fokeman 6th Jun 2016 | | CD SingleTim Finn - Persuasion (1993) | What tended to happen was, that if you had the packaging for the 1st CD, you threw away the packaging for the second CD and put the CD in the space in the 1st CD's packaging.
