albert 18th Apr 2019 | | CinemaThe Deep (1977) (1977) | After the goldmine that was Jaws, this Peter Benchley thriller must have ticked all the boxes in Hollywood, and it certainly enticed me and a bunch of friends to join the queue outside the cinema. Alas it had nothing to get too excited about, and I remember being very disappointed while watching it.
The story involves a bunch of people who do underwater diving and when investigating a wreck they discover a large stash of drugs in small glass vials, the wreck is also home to a large deadly fish of some sort. A criminal gang or salvage company get on their backs and I think they also get tangled up with some voodoo hokum and, well you can probably guess the rest, but I hardly recall it being as thrilling as Jaws (as per the hype), maybe I was just too young to appreciate how deep it was.
EDIT (with spoilers): Thinking about it, this is one of those films that has a stupid plot thread, in this case it is the drugs. The drugs haul brings a lot of danger to the couple and yet they go and recover it from the wreck and then stash it in some kind of tower hiding place. Why? are they planning on selling it? dunno, can't remember. I suppose without that we don't have much of a story. They could have just let the 'bad guys' have it, they could have told the authorities, but instead they bring themselves a lot of trouble and then they eventually just blow up the tower, huh?, where's the logic, where's the police?

albert 18th Apr 2019 | | CinemaFaster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965) (1965) | Probably Russ' most consistently entertaining movie with hilariously bitchy OTT dialogue, dangerous women up to no good and dumb square-jawed himbos taking the punishment. A big influence on pop culture still to this day with quotes and images instantly recognisable on posters, t-shirts, mugs etc. The trademark rapid fire editing and great camera angles are coming into place and of course it has that wonderful theme tune.

albert 17th Apr 2019 | | CinemaNightmares In A Damaged Brain (1981) (1981) | Condemned as a video nasty and banned, sort of, this controversial slasher film has had a difficult history and not for reasons you might think. "Mustn't corrupt the young", but I got to see it at my school's video club [yes really], and I don't think it affected me, ...much, ...well I suppose the axe in my bathroom is, erm, well enough of that.
Effects guru Tom Savini was apparently involved, just to give advice, but demanded that his name be removed from the credits once he saw the finished product (and that is one cut that will never be reinstated). It was rumoured that most objections to the film were because of the negative depiction of mental health, though I believe the cuts were for the usual type of things. Most notoriously, in the UK, the distributor ended up with a prison sentence when a previous version of the film slipped out instead of the BBFC-approved cut.
The film has recently been released in the UK by 88Films remastered, restored and uncut, though personally I think that they should have trimmed many scenes just to quicken the pace and lose some of the plot holes.

The film has been remastered for DVD and has English subtitles, though I have to say that even with my very poor French I could still recognise that the translation presented was not very accurate.

albert 27th Mar 2019 | | CinemaSymphonie Pour Un Massacre (Symphony For A Massacre) (1963) (1963) | So pleased that this film is now on dvd/Blu-ray with English subtitles, and I watched it last night.
The film has the edge on crime because it has major contributions by crime writer José Giovanni (Joseph Damiani), an ex-con with a pretty unsavoury history, but any film which has his involvement is generally worth a look.
I should add, if you are not too familiar with French geography (important to the story), that Marseille down south is about as far away from Paris as you can get and Lyon is on-route, whereas Brussels in Belgium would be northbound-ish.
