LaurenceD SUBS 25th Feb 2021 | | Classical ItemMinneapolis Symphony Orchestra, Antal Dorati - Kodály's Háry János Suite (1957) | Part of Mercury's initial release of 12 stereo tape items (all stacked inline format). The Billboard article gives the release date of July 18, 1957.
LaurenceD SUBS 19th Dec 2020 | | Classical ItemBBC Symphony Orchestra, Lionel Friend - Havergal Brian: Symphony No.3 (1989) | The tracks listed as [untitled] refer not to movements, but to index markers in the liner notes, e.g. "... from the long opening bass clarinet theme [18] through episodes magically remote ...".
The only CD I have so far that separates tracks in this fashion.

LaurenceD SUBS 3rd Dec 2020 | | Classical ItemAmerican Recording Society Orchestra, Dean Dixon - Walter Piston: Symphony #2 (1951) | This recording actually features the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and was recorded at the Vienna Konzerthaus in 1951. The pseudonym for the orchestra was likely used because of contractual reasons.
Dean Dixon was a black conductor in America and struggled with prejudice in the 1940s, which is probably the main reason that he (and his wife, pianist Vivian Rivkin) relocated to Europe in 1949. There is a good article about him at The Art Music Lounge.

LaurenceD SUBS 24th Nov 2020 | | Classical ItemSteber, Gedda, Elias, Tozzi, Resnik, Mitropoulos - Barber: Vanessa (1990) | Most reviews for this release are from 1990, but this may have been released a year or two earlier... still checking

LaurenceD SUBS 16th Nov 2020 | | Classical ItemGuildhall String Ensemble - Corelli: 12 Concerti Grossi, Op. 6 (1992) | This group also sometimes credited as Guildhall Strings.
LaurenceD SUBS 8th Oct 2020 | | Classical ItemFrederica von Stade - Mahler Songs (1979) | Note that the insert/wrapper shows this as a CBS Masterworks release, while the tape shows Columbia Masterworks.
LaurenceD SUBS 22nd Sep 2020 | | Classical ItemJohns, Huttenlocher, Corboz - Puccini: Messa Di Gloria | Also released in Quadraphonic.
This seems to be a reissue of Erato STU 70890.
LaurenceD SUBS 18th Aug 2020 | | Classical ItemBerliner Philharmoniker, Riccardo Mutti - Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 (1986) | Bruckner revised this symphony several times between 1874 and 1888. Based on the included notes and the movement descriptions, I believe that this is a performance of the so-called 1878-1880 edition from Leopold Nowak.
LaurenceD SUBS 8th Aug 2020 | | Classical ItemJosef Greindl, Hertha Klust - Carl Loewe: 3 Balladen: Archibald Douglas, Der Nöck, Edward (1958) | Not 100% sure about that release date; might be 1959. This item was in print for a number of years and there are versions with varying covers and labels, but all with the same cat#.
My cover has the date 7/61 on the back lower right.

LaurenceD SUBS 14th Jul 2020 | | Classical ItemThe Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, Arthur Weisberg - Varèse: Offrandes/Intégrales/Octandre/Ecuatorial (1972) | Varèse also used the name Edgar at times, so we'll have to deal with that variation...
LaurenceD SUBS 21st Jun 2020 | | Classical ItemBerlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Lorin Maazel - Symphony No. 8 In B Minor "Unfinished"/Symphony No. 4 In C Minor "Tragic" | The German release has date 7/60 on back cover
LaurenceD SUBS 14th Jun 2020 | | Classical ItemWind Soloists Of The Chamber Orchestra Of Europe - Beethoven: Music For Wind Instruments (1986) | All 4 works in this collection were composed in the 1790s; some were published well after the fact, hence the misleading opus numbers.
Some additional details:
- the quintet is catalogued as WoO 208, also referenced as Hess 19; it exists in fragmentary form, the version performed here being a reconstruction by Leopold Alexander Zellner from 1862.
- the rondino is catalogued as WoO 25.

LaurenceD SUBS 27th May 2020 | | Classical ItemMalan, Thompson, Sutherland - Efrem Zimbalist Sr. And Jr. (1976) | Father and son composers... thanks to Roy Malan for getting these works recorded and released.

LaurenceD SUBS 15th May 2020 | | Classical ItemHausmusik - Beethoven: Septet, String Quintet (1993) | Added images from BMG Direct Marketing release.
LaurenceD SUBS 15th Apr 2020 | | Classical ItemJulius Katchen, L'Orchestre De La Suisse Romande, Ernest Ansermet - Piano Concertos (1954) | Note to MR B PAGE: I removed an item identical to this entry, posted at the same time; presumably from an inadvertent click on 'Submit This Item' while the website was spinning...
I see that one of our mods had made the same exact adjustments to each entry as well ;-)

LaurenceD SUBS 8th Apr 2020 | | Classical ItemPhiladelphia Orchestra, Eugene Ormandy - Dello Joio: Suite ("Air Power") (1959) | The TV series premiered on November 11, 1956. The mono LP (ML 5214) was released in late 1957, while the stereo LP was not released until 1959. Stereo copies are somewhat harder to acquire; I would think that interest in the series would have waned over time, which may account for that.
LaurenceD SUBS 18th Feb 2019 | | Classical ItemThe Royal Danish Orchestra, Leonard Bernstein - Nielsen: Symphony No. 3 (1965) | Forgot to mention that my copy is lacking the insert.
LaurenceD SUBS 16th Feb 2019 | | Classical ItemMilanov, Di Stefano, Warren, Elias, Tozzi - Verdi: The Force Of Destiny (La Forza Del Destino) (1959) | The back side of the box has a flap with a metal clasp, which makes it difficult to lay flat upon the scanner. So, that image is a bit fuzzy.
LaurenceD SUBS 5th Jan 2019 | | Classical ItemArnold Schoenberg - Schoenberg Conducts Schoenberg: Pierrot Lunaire (1975) | Recorded September 24-26 1940.
Here is an interesting article about the test pressings from which these album tracks were selected, and the difficulty for performers (Stiedry-Wagner in this case) of determining the correct pitch and timing when interpreting the Sprechstimme of a composition such as this one: The Test Pressings of Schoenberg Conducting Pierrot lunaire: Sprechstimme Reconsidered

LaurenceD SUBS 31st Dec 2018 | | Classical ItemVarious Artists - Four Tenors...Same Aria (1953) | Looks like kind of a follow-up or companion release to the LP: Ten Tenors: Ten Arias / RCA Victor LM-1202 (Mar, 1952). These 4 tenors are featured on the LP, but singing different arias.
LaurenceD SUBS 23rd Dec 2018 | | Classical ItemJessye Norman, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Kurt Masur - R. Strauss: Vier Letzte Lieder; 6 Orchesterlieder (1983) | Lyrics insert is missing from my copy.
LaurenceD SUBS 20th Dec 2018 | | Classical ItemLotte Lehmann - Lotte Lehmann Sings (1951) | All arias are sung in German (including The Marriage Of Figaro and Madame Butterfly)
LaurenceD SUBS 4th Dec 2018 | | Classical ItemBallet Theatre Orchestra, Joseph Levine - Bernstein: Fancy Free (1953) | On my copy shown here, It looks like the original catalog number L-8197 has been updated (on the back cover only) as H-8197 with the aid of a rubber stamp. I will add the new number in the alt field, although I don't know what was going on with Capitol's prefix assignments during that time.
LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Dec 2018 | | Classical ItemLondon Symphony Orchestra, Colin Davis - Stravinsky: Orpheus (1967) | There is a mistake on the labels (with my copy at least): side 1 lists the symphony and side 2 lists Orpheus. The listing on the cover correctly indicates what the two sides actually play.
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Oct 2018 | | Classical ItemLondon Symphony Orchestra, Eduardo Mata - Carlos Chávez: The Complete Symphonies (1992) | I have given this entry the label name VoxBox, but would it be better grouped with Vox, with note: "Voxbox series"? In any case I think that VoxBox2 and VoxBox3 should be assigned to the same label as this one.
Also - I have entered tracks 1/2 and 2/6 as-is, with the apparent typographical errors.
LaurenceD SUBS 1st Oct 2018 | | Classical ItemSt. Louis Symphony Orchestra, André Previn - Copland: The Red Pony; Britten: Sinfonia Da Requiem (1964) | According to the liner notes, this is Previn's first recording as a conductor of symphonic music.
LaurenceD SUBS 7th Sep 2018 | | Classical ItemI Solisti Di Milano, Angelo Ephrikian - Benedetto Marcello: Concerti A Cinque Opera I (1-6) (1995) | These recordings were originally issued ca. 1965, in double LP sets (along with concerti 7-12) on various labels (Das Alte Werke, Harmonia Mundi, Amadeo).
LaurenceD SUBS 16th Aug 2018 | | Classical ItemVarious Artists - Mainly Mozart Festival 2001: Chamber Music Recital, June 13 2001 (2001) | I cannot be absolutely sure about the release date, but as I recall these recordings would become available for purchase online not too long after the performances took place.
LaurenceD SUBS 17th Jul 2018 | | Classical ItemKipnis, Blegen, Luxon, Meints - The Anna Magdalena Bach Notebook (1984) | I have reproduced the track titles as shown in the insert/booklet, i.e. each track preceded by its page number in the Anna Magdalena notebook. I have also included composer names, some definite, some speculative (?).
I do enjoy the presentation and performances, the only drawback being that the original notes from the LP release were reproduced as-is, reduced in size for the CD insert. As a result a magnifying glass is required to read them.
