albert 8th Apr 2021 | | Multi-FormatToo Late For Tears - Eureka! (2016) | More pointless alternative artwork, commission work for useless people.
|
albert 8th Apr 2021 | | Blu-rayThe Big Knife - Arrow (2017) | Also includes a booklet. I'm not keen on those alternative artwork covers that plague UK releases on DVDs and Blu-rays, although this one is a better effort than most that I've seen.
Is there anyone who liked the alternative artwork that was substituted on T.Rex LP album covers in the 1980s? No of course not, so why do we get alternative artwork for old films? Arrow if you are reading this comment then please stop the practice!!

albert 31st Jan 2021 | | Blu-rayThe Good, The Bad And The Ugly - Warner Bros. Home Entertainment (2020) | Special features pretty much ported over from those found on the earlier DVD editions like this one.
When watching the special features you can see clips of how the film ought to have looked had they not messed around with the colours.

albert 31st Jan 2021 | | DVDThe Good, The Bad And The Ugly - MGM (2004) | Great version. This DVD restores most of the cut scenes, and the colours and sound are just perfect...... unlike the 2020 'remastered' UK Blu-ray with it's shockingly bad saturated colours.

albert 28th Jan 2021 | | Blu-ray Box SetThe Atom Egoyan Collection - Artificial Eye (2014) | There is an equivalent DVD box set, and I believe all of the discs were released individually in standard sized cases, utilising similar artwork.

The Sweet Hereafter Blu-ray includes the short film Open House.

albert 28th Jan 2021 | | Blu-rayThe Graduate - Studiocanal (2017) | I can't remember a leopard being in the movie, however I do note that the most synonymous/associated image - the one with the stocking'ed leg - has been relegated to a small trimmed picture on the back cover. I suppose this is to pacify the tedious uptight people who would never want to watch this movie at all.

albert 16th Nov 2020 | | Blu-rayDark Star - Fabulous Films (2012) | This Blu-ray includes 2 versions of the film: the 83m theatrical version and the 73m director's cut, however only the theatrical version has been remastered. The director's cut is definitely the better one for pace and sustaining interest as the extra minutes in the theatrical version are really just filler to make the film length acceptable for cinema distribution; however the image quality is way below that of the remastered theatrical version.
The extras include a very good 2 hour documentary which mostly uses interviews from people involved in making the film. John Carpenter is represented by a muffled taped interview recorded by a researcher many years ago (thankfully subtitled), but Dan O'Bannon died in 2009 so his wife speaks on his behalf.
The documentary reveals that once they had left college and got external financing, much of the acting in the original student version was ditched in favour of reshooting with better sets and scripting. The character of Talby seems to have been added later hence why he doesn't actually share the frame with another actor, likewise the dead captain. The experience was a big wake up call for John Carpenter, it did not open doors as he expected and consequently he is now dismissive of the whole thing.
Still though I think it remains a good effort.

albert 22nd Apr 2020 | | DVDBlade Runner: The Final Cut - Warner Bros. (2007) | Just found some old notes that I wrote a few years ago in an email regarding this 'Final Cut':
I eventually did get the DVD and had a side by side comparison of what the changes were, some were really geeky like he changed the serial number on the snakeskin when looking through the microscope. The dove flying off at the end, now has a completely different backdrop instead of looking like a factory wall in an industrial estate, but the resolution has radically dropped so you see a pixelated dove instead. Generally I don't care much for the new dark & contrast look of the final cut, massive amounts of detail are lost, oh and the one sweary f-word has been replaced by "father". I also noticed that the editing has been done in blocks of approx. 10 mins each so looking at the two versions side by side the new version gets out of step when additional scenes are added then judders back into step as scenes are trimmed down. The chase scene at the end has a lot of resequencing. The soundtrack is much improved. The much touted 'extra minutes' are rather disappointingly about 3 minutes of extra rolling credits at the end.
I think I prefer the old directors cut, because it looks better and most of the additional scenes on the new 'final cut' don't really add anything or are just scenes that have their order sequenced differently. The dove flying off does look hokey though.

albert 25th Sep 2019 | | DVD Box SetJean-Pierre Melville - Optimum World (2009) | Very good boxset, though I don't own it since I already had the individual titles. Somewhat annoying for me to see Le Cercle Rouge has the original French language with English subtitles since the separate DVD that I bought has a bad English dub.
|
albert 17th Aug 2019 | | DVDLa Piscine - M6 Vidéo (2017) | Really disappointed that this 2017 DVD was listed on Amazon as having English language options - it does not; the only option is French language. The DVD producers don't even provide French subtitles for the English dialogue bits in the film.
Typical French lousiness.

albert 6th Aug 2019 | | DVDTom And Jerry Golden Collection Volume Un - Warner Home Video (2011) | The uncensored Tom & Jerry Golden Collection has been available in USA for a few years and it doesn't look like it will ever get released in the UK, probably due to the PC brigade. Hurrah then for the French who did release it, and so far, from what I've seen, the cartoons are indeed uncensored.
Now the thing about Tom & Jerry is that the extreme violence and the dangerous things the duo get up to (like with electrical sockets) are probably more objectionable than the racial sight gags and the smoking (which as examples are the scenes most often cut). Unfortunately it doesn't look like we will get any more volumes in the near future because objections about content have apparently been raised.
The restoration on the cartoons does look great, there is a Blu-ray available in the USA and that should look amazing. The only problem I can see with the French DVD is that some of the titles are sized at 640x480 and some are sized at 480x360 and have a large black border (see screenshot of the 'Kitty Foiled' title) so I don't know what went wrong there.
The French booklet gives the French titles (which true to form are some lazy and uninspired efforts) but the DVD menus will play entirely in English with the correct titles if your player is set accordingly.
