albert 14th May 2017		Magazine Cut (1987)	Cut, the monthly paper, was printed in Edinburgh but was available regionally in parts of the UK, certainly in the North East, however I don't think it was readily found in London as I only had 2 issues in my pile of old papers. Now I am in the process of sorting through old papers to chuck/sell and I can genuinely state that in comparison to Cut all of the big inky press papers - NME, Sounds, Melody Maker - were totally off target pushing the most boring of bands on big labels and ignoring any band/record that was 'small', or 'tiny' if truth be told. I have added a couple of samples from Cuts pages to illustrate just what you didn't get in the NME, the 'new releases' lists include 7" for The Vaselines, Talulah Gosh, Baby Lemonade, Slaughter Joe, The Sound, The Bachelor Pad, Josef K, The Beat Poets, Man From Delmonte, etc - stuff that NME & Sounds just wouldn't even mention on a couple of lines. Meanwhile by comparison, NME (18 April 1987) had a feature on 'The New Independents' - which all look like funded fake indie labels - all of them dance: Rhythm King, Fon, Champion etc. Cut also gives space to list fanzines with contact addresses and most importantly it has pages for introducing new bands without any accompanying hype or pseudo-ramblings that proliferate the pages of the weeklies. I am keeping nothing from my pile of the weekly press, though I am flipping through the pages one last time, (hardly anything is now of interest), thankfully I didn't rely entirely on the music press to keep me informed about music. With hindsight I can see just how much was missed by the usual weekly press, its just a shame that Cut wasn't more widely available as it certainly contained more of the stuff that collectors clamour for these days (always a sign of the best music). Probably also helps explain why Scotland's music was quite a bit more invigorating than most places elsewhere in the UK at the time.

albert 6th Apr 2017		Magazine NME (1989)	David Gedge, Guy Chadwick and Ian McCulloch joined Mr Peel on the cover but Mark E. Smith refused to share a photo with the Bunnyman (according to Steve Hanley's book). The biggest disappointment though was Fergal Sharkey and The Undertones not performing.
albert 5th Apr 2017		Magazine Sounds (1989)	Been spending time browsing/chucking old magazines, this is a sad demise of Sounds and the collapse looks obvious when scanning the magazines in sequence - they simply have no focus and no cohesion. In this issue we have part one (of six) of an article "The Great American Adventure" to alert us, supposedly to what is happening Stateside, the 'best' they offer here from the West Coast are Junkyard, Stickdog, Tragic Mulatto and Firehose (fIREHOSE as its normally typed) and hardly likely to excite anybody. The features on the bands are very bitty, not really telling us anything. But then there is also a free EP which includes some American bands but it is no tie-in to the main article, so its adrift, what is the point of that.... well I suppose it did get me to buy the issue! Generally there is no substance, the next issue of Sounds heralds Sylvia Juncosa, Giant Sand, Naked Prey, The Sidewinders and American Music Club, and a couple of issues onwards the live reviews are slagging off the bands they are here trying to tell us to go check out. Sounds closed for good after a couple more tedious years.

I think in those days bands accepted that it was normal to play gigs in every available venue up and down the country for half of the year and build up a loyal following. Bands these days seem to demand the opposite and then see their careers evaporate overnight.

You can read the magazine from front cover to centre page in Welsh, then flip it over and read it again, back cover to centre page in English. Here is their archived website.
albert 9th Jun 2016		Magazine Spiral Scratch (1989)	100 pages. The London Collectors Shops feature lists 43 record shops, (most of which I had visited), less than 10 of these now exist. Other features include a 4AD feature without discography, The Mighty Lemon Drops, and erm actually not a great deal here, there are listings of records for sale.

Contents include a feature on Pop Will Eat Itself/The Wonder Stuff, Iron Maiden discography, a 10 page feature on The Prisoner TV series, another obsessive 'list of live performances' this time for The Smiths. What I find interesting when looking through these old magazines is the amazingly low prices that dealers were offering for purchasing major vinyl rarities off the unsuspecting public, at the time I bought the magazine I knew these were poor prices but looking at them today they are just plain ridiculous.

Contents include an obsessive Sisters Of Mercy 'list of live performances 1981-1985' with set lists where known (or copied off bootleg tapes possibly), A Creation label discography and a Sarah/Sha-La-La label discography, oh and a Primitives discography.

albert 28th Jul 2015		Magazine 117 (1990)	117 fanzine had a short run of issues, the last one I own is issue 8, I don't know if there were more. But it was very compact with the important info on what was good and not afraid to warn you about the rubbish being pushed as psyche 117 was named in homage to an obscure band that none of the contributors could remember nor find any info about, however thanks to the wonderful internet you can see and hear 117 in all their glory on this Pathe 'swinging London' newsclip (they are about 5 minutes in) as the soundtrack to a 'happening' created by Damon Albarn's dad!, enjoy: [YouTube Video]
