If an issue is released with alternative covers, should they be separate entries or not ? Magazines quite often make 2 or 3 alternative covers for an issue. In this extreme case there are 20 different artist covers for the issue.

I agree, treat them like you would a record. If there are label variations we upload to the same listing. I expected to see others upload regional variations of Beautiful Gardens, which has variations of cover depending on which garden centre in the UK you buy it from (see link). If you mouse over the cover I've uploaded you'll see how I've marked it as the Whitehall garden centre issue. I do a similar thing when I upload Radio Times (e.g. treating South-West and North-East editions as if they were label variations). Not everyone does this, but I think it makes sense to follow the lead of the record worlds when uploading magazines.
However, I've treated The Somerset Country Gardener as a separate issue, as each of the regional variations (Cotswold, Devon, Dorset, Hampshire and Somerset) were introduced at different times, so they each have their own issue numbers (again, see link).

The problem with RT / TV Times can be that there are some regional content internally giving more than just a cover difference. But I am happy with the overall idea of a lead magazine with scans and maybe comments for the variations.
Unfortunately a single entry is not very collector-friendly. If you have The Beatles cover seeing Rolling Stones may be misleading especially if your collection is huge.
If someone is in the process of getting all those 20 Dazed&Confused cover variants having just 1 entry for all makes the tracking of Collection and Wantlist a difficult task.
This situation can be facilitated with personal Notes of course but that's an inconvenient solution compared to separate entries.
But where the 1 entry way may become less effective is any list based on the cover subject. It is obvious a couple of Noel Gallagher faces in a list called "Blur covers" and vice versa will look out of place and even hurting to some :)
Of course if a single entry decision comes from general philosophy and rules of the site it should be this way, however as you may see it brings some restrictions to the site usage.
Its no more of a problem than wants / collection lists on 45worlds having promo labels PS and stock labels mixed together most of the time. All that is needed (!) is database tweaks to allow selection of different images in lists and in wants/collections rather than the lead default image for a record entry
If such function is added (ability to select an alternative image for lists and wants/collections rather than the lead default image) it would be also great to have an ability to add an item to a list more than once :)
I have another question, about The Big Issue mag Welsh edition. I believe it can't be the same entry because of independent/different issue numbering, but should it be an entirely separate magazine title ? Or should it be still "The Big Issue" just with appropriate Note ?
I have created The Big Issue [Cymru] but maybe it was incorrect ?
