We discussed The FIRST label from Taiwan a while back - see here. Essentially everything on this label is a naughty bootleg. Now another label has appeared Blackcat which has a strikingly similar appearance on the labels, I am guessing this was also a naughty bootleg label?

I added another First (Taiwan) LP a few days ago by the Righteous Bros. See here http://www.45worlds.com/vinyl/album/fl1278
I agree that it appears to be a bootleg. I still have fragments of the sleeve in my scanner. The clear orange vinyl was a nice touch, however. When I bought it used, years ago in the U.S., I thought that the original owner might have been in the military, and got it overseas.

I think for countries where copyright laws were either very different (or perhaps totally ignored) then it's maybe best not to classify them as bootlegs but instead to mention in the introduction or biography of the label that they are legally dubious otherwise we'll have countries with hardly any releases as they'll all be under the pirate flag.

Records issued in Taiwan were legally for sale in Taiwan only, and not intended for export, and thus are neither bootlegs or pirates. I gather that they were exported on a one-by-one basis by military personnel during the time that Taiwan was an R+R (rest and recreation) center for those serving in Viet Nam, late 1960s-early 1970s. For whatever reason, the international record companies of the time, EMI, CBS, Polydor, Decca, et al, never established a presence in Taiwan.

Judging from the dead wax area of a few of the LPs that I have come across (on First, Crown and other labels) they appear to have been pressed from US metal work, either the mothers or stampers.

Definitely this.

I would strongly disagree here. There are a few Asian countries where the Major labels do have an "official" presence, but these majors are hamstrung by that country's clearly-evident lack of copyright protection laws where just about any back-street operator could issue an LP record(of a quality ranging from gosh-awful to passable good) of the major label's top-selling artist or group, and that major label has absolutely nowhere to go in order to get any redress.
